Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
FrogGlace In other words, this film is a surreal ride.
Sarita Rafferty There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Fulke Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Finches_Wings It definitely does not deserve all the low ratings. Take it for what it is and it's a very pleasant, well-written, well-developed and also very well-casted movie. Weird, but good natured and likable characters appear throughout. The plots turns a couple of times, revealing more about characters as we go on. Yes from one point of view it could be seen as sappy or cheesy, all the stereotypical elements are all there. Its character was rather unique, though, there was something fresh about it that made the film as a whole very likable. The leads were very good and convincing. Heather Graham and David Sutclife did a very satisfying job at portraying their characters and they should get more exposure in different films. Supporting cast were pretty nice too.In short, an enjoyable flick for a wintry evening, especially when you want nothing else but to sit back and relax watching harmless and good-natured piece of entertainment.
zoodle328 Although I wouldn't vote this movie as Oscar worthy, I do think that because it's a chick-flick, it receives a bad rap. Pippa, a headstrong travel-writer is a sweet ingénue, and Heather Graham does a very good job of displaying Pippa's weaknesses and confusion. While yes, this movie does have a plot centralized around a wedding magazine, it also shows a slight sophistication with it's talk of gay marriage, and it's final climax has substance. And let's not forget David Sutcliffe as Ian...talk about beautiful. And in one special scene, the chemistry between Pippa and Ian is charge! Don't discount this movie because of it's cutesy title and seemingly silly plot. I guarantee a fun time while watching Cake!
sweetdiva_cara Heather Graham playing a bad girl with Sandra Oh to back her up = funny! The stereotypes were played to a laughable "T". Taye Diggs in anything sex's up the quotient and Heather Graham was beautiful and real in all her curves.Sure it was formula-like. Sure the casting of the serious hot guy could have been a little better, and the daddy/daughter thing was a little forced. This was definitely an entertaining movie and better than most of the solely-for-entertainment films that come out of Canada.I think it's a great step in the right direction for Canadian production and would love to see more like it. Can I get the soundtrack, please??
August1991 First of all, let me as a Canadian taxpayer express a minor rant. I am shocked and appalled that my tax dollars were used to make this trash. On open-minded days, I am willing to consider the idea that taxpayers should assist artistic endeavours. "Cake" is not, in any sense whatsoever, one of these endeavours.I have no problem with formulaic romantic comedies. Garry Marshall, for example, is a modern master of the genre. What's to criticize? A Hallmark card is a Hallmark card. Well, "Cake" is a Hallmark card drawn by the worst student in a Grade 8 art class. I blame the director. The script is not bad, and the actors seem capable. Rather, the wrong take was included, or the good take never made. The direction and editing are lacking.Lastly, I would have given this movie one star except for the few isolated points of humour. Two examples: I laughed when Heather Graham's cellphone played "Boogie Nights" and when someone suggested that the business would move to Scarborough.
