ian I am astonished at the high rating for this film. This is a movie whose makers cynically exploited the deaths of three people for their own ends, profit being the major one. Just consider the following.The Lana character, based on a real-life person as all of the characters are, is shown as being present at the murders. She wasn't and in fact sued the makers for saying she was there and also for depicting her as continuing to date Brandon after she discovered he was in fact a she. That's a lie too.How reckless and irresponsible is it to put someone at the scene of a murder they weren't at? The police could have arrested her and accused her of lying to them. I'm sure she had an alibi but what if she didn't? This girl could have ended up in prison as an accessory just because the idiotic movie company figured it would make a better story to place her there.The film turns Brandon into someone he wasn't. This woman/man was a total sociopath. He didn't care who he hurt or what damage he did to people as long as he could "explore" his sexuality. He could have been upfront with girls he was dating, explained the situation, but no, Brandon was the only one that mattered. People he sucked into his orbit ended up frightened, confused, nauseated or even dead. This guy was a danger to anyone he came into contact with. No, he didn't deserve to die but I'll keep my sympathy for the young mother and the unfortunate young man who ended up murdered as a direct result of meeting or befriending Brandon.The movie paints Brandon as a tortured transgender and that is correct, he was. What they leave out is his callous disregard for anyone but himself. But the movie makers don't care about Brandon, he's there to be exploited. He's there for Hilary Swank to use to get herself an Oscar in probably the hammiest and least-deserved Oscar-winning performance ever. But she didn't get the Oscar for acting, she got it because she was playing a murdered transgender, it was a PC role with an Oscar automatically attached to it. Anyone could have played it and still won the Oscar.Oh, except a real transgender. Hollywood will only go so far for political correctness. God forbid they should use the Real Thing.

Spikeopath It's one of those films that any film lover has to see to judge for themselves. A critical darling and an award winner, it's a film of undoubted emotional power. It is based on the tragic case of Teena Brandon (Hilary Swank) who was raped and murdered in 1993, it would become one of the significant cases of hate crime in American history.From the off Kimberly Peirce's film sets out its stall that we are in bleak territory, and so it proves. It dangles little shards of light, but constantly it proves uncompromising and unpleasant. There's a nagging irk that main characters are very thinly drawn, where motives are given short shrift, and this is bizarre given that the pic runs for nearly two hours. However, the performances of both Swank and Chloë Sevigny are outstanding, and Peirce handles the darkest scenes in the movie with a grace and tact that deserves applause. A tale that needed to be told, even in truncated form, Boys Don't Cry is fine cinema making. 8/10

Red_Identity I had no idea this was based on a true story going into it, but I had a good feeling by the end of it. It really was hard-to-watch, a lot more than I had expected. The performance from Hilary Swank is pretty powerful, she manages to instantly make Brandon into a real human being and doesn't at all feel like a gimmick or just for show. Chloe Sevigny is also quite good, what a shame where her career went. The first half of it is relatively easy-going so where it ends up going just hits that much harder. Very good though, definitely strongly recommended for those seeking it out, if not to see it for the issues that it brings up, on a purely artistic level then it is.

Chris L Despite the director/writer good intentions, the movie as a whole turns out to be too muddled : there is no clear line, you just drift inside this group with absolutely no dramatic tension except at the end when everything accelerates tragically. This type of subject must be tackled with grip which isn't the case here, scenes follow each other in a boring monotony and there is a terrible lack of identification with the characters especially Brandon, perfectly embodied by Hillary Swank. After barely 45 minutes, all hope for this real story is lost and the outcome therefore comes off as a great relief for a long and unproductive movie.
