I like Black Panther, but I didn't like this movie.

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

4 disaffected young men hijack a petrol station. They kidnap customers and hold them hostage. There is a fair bit that can be criticised in this film but I enjoyed it immensely. The comedy is utterly amoral- I kept finding myself laughing at things I shouldn't be laughing at. The main characters behave very badly on the whole but I found myself sympathising with them immensely, even before the flashbacks explaining their motivation(s).The acting and production is very enthusiastic if not overly polished- looks like they had a blast making this.Criticisms-The production values are pretty low for a Korean flick. Some aspects of some scenes seem rather gratuitous- like all the motorbike stunts when the delivery boys turn up. The plot gets a little silly at times. Clearly in real life they would have been blown to smithereens a few times with all the petrol spilled. This movie was a massive hit for me, it takes a lot of chances and lacks a little polish but is all the better for breaking so many rules.

I've been on the IMDb since 2001 and have written very few reviews, but this movie was so bad that I feel compelled to warn everyone I can. I can honestly say that this movie has no redeeming features and is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. You've already seen the plot outline, but it doesn't give tell you enough. You've got 4 thugs who rob a gas station, then decide to stay and work there all night, presumably to make some money. Of course, given their violent carefree tendencies, they would logically just go rob some other business. Instead, they stay and willingly work a crappy service sector job that most people don't want.Their staying there is mostly a vehicle to provide encounters with obnoxious customers, à la Clerks, but any comedic value in these is squandered. The biggest flaw would be the characters. The protagonists are just violent and obnoxious thugs with no charisma whatsoever. The growing group of hostages consists of one-dimensional whimpering crybabies, which wears thin very fast. There isn't a single likable person among the whole cast. After 45 minutes of pointless slapstick with nary a funny occurrence, the film takes a wild stab at character development, showing why these thugs are the way they are. But it's all very shallow and perfunctory. The technical aspects of the film are also severely wanting. The camera-work is rough and jarring, the editing is mess and the lighting (or lack of it) is a disaster. The "comedy" is repetitive and unfunny, the cast is totally unlikeable and the whole movie is an aimless mess. I watched the whole thing in hopes that it would improve. It doesn't. In the end, it's just a lame and boring disaster. There are many good Korean films. Go rent a different one.

I just finished watching AtGS, and am trying to get a handle on what the heck I just saw. The movie takes place over a single night, and is a "funny" hostage drama of sorts. While billed as a comedy, I'm guessing a lot of the humor will be lost on non-Korean audiences. It's a very odd film. The plot has been discussed in detail here, but to sum up, four bored, disaffected youth vandalize a gas station, and a month later return to hijack it and extort money from the patrons. If someone annoys the young punks, they are added to the ever-growing list of hostages being held in a back room. One man, Mad Dog (Bulldozer) watches over them with a club. Various characters are played off each other, and we get a bit of back story on each of our heroes (?) while waiting for the inevitable gang vs police climax. It's a bizarre film, and while quite silly and rarely serious, I never found the slapstick humor amusing. It's hard to wring humor out of old men and women being terrorized by wanna-be thugs, even if the victims are unsympathetic. The 4 attackers's motivations are never really explained; we're supposed to believe that their random, violent actions are a way of rebelling against a rigid, authoritarian society that marginalizes their talents. Yet this explanation is unconvincing, and the viewer is left with a hodgepodge of amusing scenes that don't cut it as a 110 minute movie.Attack the Gas Station is a fast-paced, energetic film, but it fails as both an action film and as a comedy, so I'm not really sure how to recommend it. If you're a fan of Korean films, dark humor, and goofy characters, it may be worth a look. Overall, a sub-par film with a few good unexplored ideas.

**SPOILER ALERT** I don't know if ATTACK THE GAS STATION holds up to repeat viewings, but it's terrific fun once, at least. An adrenalized, ultra-stylized, comic-book-violent black comedy about a group of well-scrubbed but very alienated youth who rob a gas station out of boredom, before then deciding to return and run the place for a night, pocketing all of the sales, and then taking off. Of course, the plan goes a little awry...The style is a deadpan blend of Kubrick, Tarantino, Peckinpah and maybe Suzuki, played for all the gleeful nasty humor and actually sharp social critique that can be gotten out of the premise; at the very least, this film energetically puts the 'slap' back into slapstick. A Peckinpah quote/homage becomes a running punch line, which as much as anything sums up the sensibility. The way, way over-the-top climax is quite well-orchestrated.Tokyo Shock DVD is of good quality, not many extras (making-of featurette), though I don't know if this one really needs 'em.
