Softwing Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

sbull1983 There's a small few of shows I love & Red Dwarf I've loved since I was a kid - season 12 comes out this autumn! A crew who are with their fellow piers on a mining ship one day, the next they're 3 million years in the future lost in space! Lister - loves his drink & curries, smoking, Kochanski, & in some odd way is a true hero; Rimmer - power obsessed, judgmental upon others, self destructive, oddly humorous; Cat - fashion obsessed, amazingly selfish, with a hint of humanity; Kryten - self obsessed human server, strangely entertaining, lots to offer; Holly - strangely forgetful yet very amusing forgetful ships computer...this show has evolved emensely throughout the years! If you love sci fi and comedy watch this - UK, forget the US as it's insulting they redid ours, it's truly a waste of time! Red Dwarf UK in my opinion is fantastic and has many hours of fun to offer!

Sulphuric_Glue There have been lots of reviews about series 1 to series 8, and I think it's time to review Back To Earth and Red Dwarf X.Back To Earth, frankly, was a bit of a let-down. The storyline focused more on, well, an actual storyline, and comedy was replaced by drama. And I'm sorry if this is a little weird, but I just don't find the jokes funny without the studio laughter. The ending was also a bit inconclusive.All this left my expectations very low indeed for Red Dwarf X, but I found it brilliant; if anything, even better than all the others. The comedy (and studio laughter) returned. It certainly was a "Hey ho, pip and dandy" moment. (Only people who have watched the series will understand that joke. I feel sorry for you if you didn't.) So, in short: Back To Earth is to be avoided, but Red Dwarf X is to be viewed. Even if it means you lose your legs, you must watch it. Preferably now.

sykespj Anybody who enjoys quirky British comedy and science fiction couldn't help but love the first six series of this show (1988-93). Unfortunately, when writer Rob Grant left leaving only Doug Naylor to take the show forward, the show began a serious decline in quality. Series VII and VIII (1997 & 1999) were still OK, but it was pretty evident that the magic was gone.After a decade-long hiatus, the show was back in 2009 with the abominable three-part miniseries Back to Earth, now considered the ninth series. Plenty of reviewers have already noted how disappointing this series was and why, so I won't repeat the obvious.When plans for a new series to be aired in 2012 were announced, many of us who love the show shuddered, thinking that surely it couldn't be anywhere near as bad as the last effort. After watching the first couple of episodes, it is apparent that there is at least an attempt to return to the verve of the first six series. Regrettably, however, much of what I watched simply wasn't all that funny. I'll watch the rest, as I am too much of fan to miss them.My advice for anyone who has never seen an episode is to start at the beginning with Series I and work your way through the classic episodes in order. They are timelessly funny and stand up to repeated viewings.

dobbin-4 I was a bit hesitant about renting out "Red Dwarf" the first time one of my friends recommended it too me but I got it out anyway because I always like finding a new fantastic show, and this was definitely all that and more. While in the early series having a tiny budget used on props and the sets it still managed to produce fantastic story lines and new characters every episode, it was when they got a bigger budget(Season 3 or 4 and over) that they really let their creative style loose going to different funny dimensions, meeting equally funny new character's and with jokes about what different dimensions existed they still had great character jokes, which really made the humour of this show something to be reckoned with.The character's in the show are a great example of how character interaction alone can make a show 100 times better, and in this we see such a wide range of character's, lead and co starring that make this show great on its own even without all the other dimensions (This was, as I said earlier most of what the first 2 or 3 seasons were like). First there is Dave Lister, who is a slob but is also a deep down very caring and compassionate guy and to the writers credit, they really make it so that just when you think Dave is just a useless slob they write an episode which reveals more about that character and how he is really a good guy. Then there is Rimmer, and prude sort of fellow who has always wanted to become an officer but, not being able to, due to being a complete incompetent worker and a general nuisance to be around has convinced himself that he is a great worker, but has not been promoted due to being so good at what he does (Head Vending Machine Maitenence man). Anyway, as the series progresses he is one of the best walls to bounce jokes with between him and Lister, and while they are always fighting deep down they both don't hate each other and Lister is actually quite understanding of the fact that Rimmer is a complete and utter Smeghead. After that there is Kryten, one of my favourite character's in a TV show in the 20th centuries, from him trying to be more human to his pathetic whining he is another great wall of jokes with all the character's. Last of the main character's from the early seasons (Kochanski replacing Rimmer for a small time in season 7) is the obnoxious but oddly lovable Cat, who is a descendant from a cat Lister smuggled aboard (Which is the reason Dave was put into stasis and how he became the only human alive) who has now become a human looking and sounding up himself cat mutant who has an odd addiction to fashion. All these character's make the show what it is and what it always will be.Overall the time has become a classic that will (Hopefully) live on forever bringing in new waves of followers. Red Dwarf Forver!!!.
