This is How Movies Should Be Made

Your blood may run cold, but you now find yourself pinioned to the story.

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

Okay, I'd like to start off this review by saying to all those who complained about the differing, colorful complexions of the show's characters: So what? Who cares if they aren't conventional and are more varied than the more realistic and common white, black, and brown? I read in an issue of Disney Adventures magazine that featured some coverage of Disney's version of the titular character, a quote by the series's creator Jim Jinkins stating something along the lines of "It's not what's on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts". Aside from that, he probably simply wanted to make the show stand out more that way (at least, that is probably for the one thing that made it unique or distinctive at the time anyway) and I think that quite sums up his choice for giving a variety of color schemes to the characters. Additionally, this concept was inspired by a margarita stupor he had. Some reviewers here complained about the animation. Well, I'd say that the animation is fine for most of Nick's version's run, the notable exception of this and/or the art style being the episode segment, "Doug Can't Dance". The visuals in that aren't quite as crisp and it was the the first episode produced, but not aired. As for most of the characters' and cities' names, I didn't think much of them or give them much mind when I got into watching this years ago, but now that I think about it, they are odd. Although Beebe and her family's surname, Bluff, seems to suit them somehow. Recently, I found out the fictional town, Bluffington, is based in Virginia (the creator's hometown). An exception being Loretta Lequigly, who is a favorite character of mine, lesser or otherwise. Although in recent years, I thought about the name of the country that is her national descent, Yakistonia, and I wonder if it's supposed to be based on Estonia, seeing how if the "yak" part of the name were removed, the spellings of the fictional country and real country are similar. Just an interesting thought I had about that and wanted to point out that.Anyway, further into my review about the show and the eponymous character. This show and the main protagonist, Doug Funnie, aren't perfect, but they aren't that bad. I never found him nor any of the series to be boring at all. With the daydreams and fantasy sequences he has as superhero, spy, and adventurer parodies, how can those not engage anybody? But whatever. I find that those were what livened up the show even more. If those aren't enough to engage everybody, then I don't know what else will or do for them. To give my explanation of the show's premise differently from what others already said, it's basically the stories revolving around the everyday problems of your ordinary fifth or sixth grade boy that he recaps via writing in his journal. There may be other shows, cartoons or otherwise, that I like more that Doug, by even so and despite that, I'll still take this as one of the earliest Nicktoons over the more recent, mindless horse manure like Breadwinners and Pig Goat Banana Cricket any day. Doug becomes extraordinary, at least temporarily, through his imaginations to conquer his problems and predicaments. As for the phallic/sexual names of some certain characters that one reviewer pointed out, Mr. Dink, Principal Buttsavitch, Mr. Bone, I never gave thought to those either, especially the first one, not knowing that's supposed to be a sexual reference too. I wish there was a spin-off show or something that focused on other characters besides Doug though. I discovered that recently Nick has considered having a Doug movie get made at one point, but that never came to fruition. I would've liked to see how and if Nick would've done better than Doug's 1st Movie by Disney, which I haven't seen, however, from what I read about it, it doesn't seem to be better than either Nick or Disney's series. I also learned that there might be a revival of Nick's Doug, but I'd rather see a spin-off with other main characters, secondary characters, minor characters, even background characters made. With one taking advantage of several, nameless background characters, especially the female characters at Doug's school. One of which being the light blue-skinned girl who spoke in one episode, "Doug Saves Roger", and who says, "Hey Roger, you got a sign on your back!". I wish there were more moments with her and the other, lesser, female students on the program. And if they were named at all, they could be more conventional names. Again, while the show may not be exactly the best, I can still take it for what it is, even if Doug may not be the best hero. I find the lesser/background characters more interesting, even if we don't get to see them getting into depth much, if at all. I'd like to see more of them. Not without its flaws, I still consider this to be one good start for the Nicktoons.

Eh.... I say this was the bad start of the nerd protagonist, I mean, all this is , is a kid in high school. Nothing much. It would be YEARS before they got the nerd protagonist right, I mean, take a look at Friendship is Magic, and Diary of a Wimpy kid! They get it right! Here, they just made an average life. Friendship is Magic and Diary of wimpy kid made the nerds funny and likable, Doug is just life! I don't want to watch life, I want to LIVE it! Nothing much to say, it's just bland, uninteresting and, as Rainbow Dash, said, NOT COOL! I know some of you are fans of this show, And I don't hate for doing so. But, we have our opinions, and I say, it's bland. P.S. WHY DOES THE TOP TV SHOWS SAYS THAT THIS IS BETTER THAN FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC?!?!?!?

Ahh the memories of this show just make me feel warm inside, This show really takes me back to when everything was simple. This show stars the title character Doug funny who's just an average kid with a wild imagination. This show shows most of the struggles that kids dealt with in elementary school. In this show we see all of doug's imaginations in which some good and some are bad. Along in this show are other awesome characters like his blue and hip best "human" friend Skeeter valentine, his other best friend, porkchop his dog, his love interest Patti mayonaise, and his arch rival Roger klots. The things I love about all of the character are that Skeeter is very funny, kinda dumb, but loyal and has doug's back, Porkchop is so smart and also always has doug's back and he's almost human because he walks most of the time, Patti is a sweet girl who is very nice to doug but I am a little bummed that they never kissed, And my favorite character Roger who is a bully and a asshole with a good heart and I think deep down he cares for doug and is one of his good friends. Overall this show is a 9/10 for me I really dislike the Disney version that one sucks do yourself a favor people and don't watch that one and stick to the classic nickelodeon version.

On Nickelodeon today, or rather its spin off channel "Nicktoons" (yes Nickelodeon has to set up an extra channel for all the decent shows that it doesn't show anymore) "Doug" is shown at 6am everyday. The rest of the day is dedicated to shows like "Fairly odd parents" or "Spongebob square pants", each given four or five slots in a row.I, like many others who long for the return of the golden age of Nicktoons, think that shows like "Doug", "Real Monsters" and "Ren and Stimpy" should be brought back to Nickelodeon to replace these over-repeated, poor modern day excuses for cartoons. The reason shows like "Fairly odd parents" and "All grown up" will not be spoken of in ten to fifteen years (like Doug is) is because they are far too obscure. They are not art forms like "Doug", which originated from a comic book called "Doug's new shoes". They are just in - store creations to try and fill up time slots.Another reason as that right now, the best cartoons around are the ones that are aimed at late teens/early adults such as "The Simpsons", "Family guy" and "South Park". I genuinely believe that Doug could quite easily be transformed into one of these shows. My reason is that the audience Doug once entertained, like myself, are all aged around 18 - 20 years old now. Most of the children that currently watch nickelodeon probably haven't even heard of Doug, so they wont feel left out if was resurrected as an adult cartoon. What made Doug the greatest children's cartoon now and then was his age. At the time, Doug was older than his target audience, and now he is younger. In the height of Dougs popularity, his adventures and exploits were a message and a lesson to children on how to cope with teenage life and high school. Now, Doug is something adults can look at and reminisce about their own high school days. Doug is almost an animated teen movie like "American Pie" or "Ferris Beuller's Day Off", without the language and sexual exploits. What made Doug the character so great was his cynicism. He was virtually a victim of bullying but he dealt with it in a perfect, relaxed way. Of course he was geeky and paranoid much of the time, but this was outweighed by his responses to Roger Klotz's pranks. Doug was the perfect middle man, who just wanted a quiet life and would have it if it weren't for his clumsiness. The slight dynamic of Doug is that he is in no way the series' most interesting character. In most other shows he would just be a supporting character. Could you imagine "The Simpsons" if Karl was the main character? Exactly. The stories were excellent too because they were so simple. No other show has ever dedicated an entire narrative to, say, getting a haircut or a cookery lesson. A show has never been as brilliantly simple as Doug. Finally, there is the excellent Billy West. Another reason I think Doug would make an excellent adult cartoon show is the fact that Billy West is also the voice of Fry in "Futurama." He should get more work than he does. Doug is West's greatest character (closely followed by Fry).Bring back Doug! Save it from early morning limbo!
