An absolute waste of money

It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.

"Declan Mulqueen" (Richard Gere) is a terrorist for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) who is serving time in a maximum security prison in Massachusetts. That all changes one day when a Russian mob boss hires an infamous assassin known as "The Jackal" to kill a very important person in the United States in retaliation for their killing his brother a few days earlier. The problem for the FBI is that they don't know who his target is or what the assassin looks like. All they know is that the Jackal has been hired to carry out an assassination on somebody very important. So in desperation they ask Decklin to help them convince his former girlfriend "Isabella Zancona" (Mathilda May) who previously worked with a Basque Seperatist group known as the ETA and can recognize the Jackal on sight. Upon talking to him, however, they also learn that Declan knows what the Jackal looks like as well and this gives them even more reason to work with him. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that I found this film to be rather entertaining. At least for the most part. Having said that, I must also admit that there were several ridiculous scenarios thrown in which were difficult to take seriously. For example, there is no way that an IRA sniper would be given a firearm in any situation or allowed the wide range of mobility he was granted. Especially in the close proximity of the "First Lady of the United States" (played by Tess Harper). But that's Hollywood for you. In any case, this film has enough intrigue, mystery and suspense to be somewhat entertaining and for that reason I have rated it accordingly. Average.

First things first, I didn't watch The Day of the Jackal (1973). I just picked this movie out of the blue, liked its summary and went for it. And to be fair, it's quite good.I like action movies like this. Straightforward. They just cut to the point. No, this doesn't mean this movie is all about action. I think the storyline was good: they provide you with enough information, nothing more, nothing less.Of course it can be a little "over the top", but people need to remind this is fantasy; it's just a movie. So you can't take fantasy here, but shiny little vampires are OK? C'mon..! Also, to be fair, I think the movie is pretty believable!I saw people complaining, comparing this movie to Day of the Jackal. Well, like I said, I didn't watch it, but this movie is only based on Day of the Jackal, as if they just took the idea. I'm OK with that.

Unless you are very very bored with your life, try to skip this one. Watched this old movie as I'm a big B.W. fan. The first 1.5 hour of the show, it tells you how the "good guys" admire and fear the "Jackal". In the entire show, I think the Jackal only killed 1 security guard, 1 guy who helped with the equipment, and nerve poisoned another dude. Okay, fine - not killing a lot may not matter much. However, he was supposed to be a "pro" assassin/killer. Clearly, the movie plot is so one dimension that after the failed assassination, the Jackal has become an amateur, becomes vulnerable and has no plans at all.It does have some slight actions, just some.

Yeah, I know, it is so easy to bash this film as so many of you have done. It's a thriller that doesn't stand out in it's genre, pretty easy to watch but not more than that. It has a high profile cast including Bruce Willis, Richard Gere and a couple of very very decent actors slash actresses like J.K. Simmons, Diane Venora and so on, so nothing wrong with that. A more than decent director in Michael Caton-Jones, who does his best with the material he's got and doing a good job at it. Sadly he has to work with a script that has potholes the size of Hummers H3 in it, so it's easy to see why this film doesn't work the way it's supposed to.but!!!! If you have read some of the novels written by Robert Ludlum (may God rest his soul) you will have picked up some of the vibe he has put in most of his novels, putting the Jason Bourne Trilogy upfront. And just to be clear about it, I'm not talking about the miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain and also not even mentioning the Matt Damon movies (although those were really cool) but the original novels as Mr. Ludlum intended them to be. If you have these novels in the back of your head and are a fan of them you will find this movie pretty enjoyable to watch although the execution of this movie has some problems in staying believable. It is in general a pretty normal thriller with (Í'm sorry to say) some mayor flaws. But I can't escape the feeling that the script (allthough adapted from an apparent classic of which I haven't yet had the pleasure of watching) was written in the mindset of an all-out genius Robert Ludlum-vibe, which I picked up on immediately and enjoyed very much.
