Voxitype Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
mraculeated The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
Kimball Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Brooklynn There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.
Stevieboy666 A 17th century executed witch kills anybody who enters a house that was built on the site of her execution. Supernatural horror that plays out like a slasher movie with many inventive deaths every 10 minutes or so. This is well paced and there is plenty of good gore, including an exploding head in a microwave, death by an escaped circular saw, spike through forehead, and so on. This was made during the Golden Age of the slasher movie and certainly gives good value for money. Give me 1980's effects and vibe any day over 21st century CGI and remakes! Original title in 1982 was Superstition. It did appear on the seizure list during the Video Nasties farce but was given a rerelease as The Witch in 1985. Sadly this film appears to be something of a forgotten one, I can't even reference in it in my collection of horror movie books. It really does deserve a DVD/BR release so that a new audience can see it.
ernesti Superstition is a film that i stumbled upon just recently here on IMDb. It looks just as if it was made with Dario Argento style but yet it lacks the sense of style which was evident in many of Argento's films.Sense of style is something that the directer possesses, well this time there's none of it. Pacing between the kills is poor and the gore happens suddenly without sufficient tension building. It's a shame that the special effects are acceptable and look really good from time to time. After all it's just a brainless slasher film which puts less effort in being coherent. Argento was known to be very incoherent and yet this film manages to make him look like more coherent than ever. This movie is to be watched as a joke and it's great fun to laugh at. Can you just not laugh to the overdone witch laugh which is heard just too many times in the wrong places. This movie's such a mess that it's difficult to say if it's so bad that it's so good or not. It's still funny.
preppy-3 Tired film about a witch who is executed in the 1600s or so and vows revenge. It is resurrected years later and takes its revenge. This movie does seem to be made by people who had their hearts in the right place. It's dark, gloomy and has a few good moments here and there. No stupid humor either. But the low budget, primitive gore effects and lousy acting really hurt this one. The murders are gory but the "special" effects are so laughably obvious that is kills any horror or suspense. Also the film has that lousy "it's not over" ending that marred so many 1980s films. So, it looks like they set out to make a decent, gory horror film but their reach was destroyed by their budget.
Michael_Elliott Superstition (1982) ** (out of 4) Bizarre little film about a house on some church property, which has been the site for countless strange murders. A new Reverend (James Houghton) is helping a family move into the house but more and more bodies begin to pile up so he starts doing some research and discovers that the location is where a witch was killed nearly three-hundred years earlier and now she's back for revenge. Okay, this movie doesn't make a bit of sense and the lackluster direction doesn't help but at the same time this thing is so weird that it's hard not to recommend it to horror fans. While watching the movie you'll think that this is yet another film trying to cash in on the success of THE AMITYVILLE HORROR and you'd be correct but the film also tries to mix in with the various slashers out at the time as we get some rather graphic death scenes and some gore. In terms of creepiness you're not going to find any. I'd say the main reason for this is the lackluster direction and Roberson is never able to build up any type of atmosphere and for the most part there's very little to no energy in any of the scenes. The film also doesn't seem to know what it wants to do as the screenplay is pretty much all over the place and leads to one confusing scene after another. In the end not much makes sense outside of the revenge aspect because characters are constantly showing up and disappearing without any rhyme or reason. The gore aspect of the film is an interesting thing because I'm guessing the MPAA were asleep at the wheel or just not paying attention to anything going on here because while films like Friday THE 13TH were cut to shreds by the group, this film here got away with quite a bit. We've got people getting a spike in the head, decapitations, bodies cut in half plus countless other scenes. The special effects aren't the greatest in the world but they're mildly effective. The gore level really doesn't mix with anything else in the film but it at least keeps you awake through some of the most confusing aspects. Houghton turns in a decent performance in the lead with Albert Salmi and Stacy Keach, Sr. doing fine work as well. The mixture of the story and gore doesn't work but it does make the film come off with a weird vibe and mix in the story and you've got a very strange ride. It's not a good film and God knows we've had countless good and bad witch movies but this one here is of interest due to the gore level.
