Reviews
Titreenp SERIOUSLY. This is what the crap Hollywood still puts out?
Tacticalin An absolute waste of money
Lidia Draper Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Deanna There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
punisherversion1 Week 4: Runner Runner: Tomatometer rating is 8%First month in on this experiment. I will admit this is easier to do than the previous experiment as far as scheduling but man oh man viewing wise it's pretty tough. This week we have Runner Runner directed by Brad Furman of such films as The Infilitrator and the excellent The Lincoln Lawyer and starring Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck, Gemma Arterton and The Falcon himself Anthony Mackie. This movie tries to hook you in with its poker disguise. You think this is about digging into the illustratious world of online gambling. You think it's about a college student who finds himself cheated by this site and he tries to dig his way into how everything works. You would be wrong sadly. It lures you in much like a gaming site and then pulls a fast one on you. This is your standard gangster/drug cartel movie. Justin Timberlake is lured into this world by the excessive lifestyle. It makes sense since he used to work on Wall Street but he's blinded to the ruthless and cutthroat world being perpetrated by Ben Affleck's cartoonishly named villain Ivan Block. They pronounce it different ways in an attempt to make you forget how silly the name is unlike The Snowman's Harry Hole. Honestly you've seen this movie before and done much better. Ben Affleck is pretty good as smarmy asshole. He plays that pretty well. Justin Timberlake is a little too old for this role. Gemma Arterton is a non entity in this film and her relationship with Justin Timberlake's character expects us to believe they fall madly in love with each other and would do anything for each other to leave this life. That relationship is not built up well enough. It's not believable. Most of this is not believable and everyone is a garbage person in some form. This is a bland and generic movie. I would skip this one. I give this film a D.
Leofwine_draca RUNNER RUNNER is a gambling thriller, set in Costa Rica but actually filmed in Puerto Rico. It's also an entirely predictable movie, one which seems to be going through the motions throughout. The idea of a youthful character going under the wing of an older, morally dubious successful businessman is familiar from the likes of WALL STREET, while the whole FBI investigation sub-plot reminded me of Oliver Stone's SAVAGES.Sadly this is the type of film that has nothing much to say in the way of interest. For a thriller, the thrills are oddly muted, and the suspense is non-existent to say the least. I'm not sure why Justin Timberlake keeps getting cast in movies like this, because he has no discernible acting talent and he's a real bore up on screen. Ben Affleck is better, but he looks bored too and he phones it in throughout, while Gemma Arterton is cast as the eye candy once more and her acting continues to be dreadful. If you like slick photography and pretty locations, RUNNER RUNNER might be the film for you; if you want a little meat to go with the style, you'll invariably be disappointed in this one.
mm-39 Predictable! Timberlake and Affleck had strong performances. The viewer can relate with the two protagonist. The first half of the story is interesting as Timberlake tries to get out of a pickle and gets into a bigger one. The viewer learns of the world Affleck has created and can foresee the dangers/temptations involved. Regrettable the viewer foresees the plot twists and the movie becomes anti- climatic. Runner Runner becomes another 1970's style con with in the con movie. Watch American Hustle, which is far better for the art of the con genre! Well, acted directed and executed, but needed another story rewrite! I give Runner Runner a six out of ten.
FlashCallahan Richie is a student who's having trouble paying his tuition. He helps other students who want to gamble online, but for a small fee. When he gambles online himself, he loses but believes he was cheated. He goes to Costa Rica, where the site is generated from, and shows the owner, Ivan Block, proof that he was cheated.Block then offers him a job which he takes, and begins to learn how he does business. But the FBI want to nail Block, and intimidate Richie to help them......The structure for films like this are as old as the hills.Good guy confronts a high powered businessman, said man offers big money, there's always a good looking girl involved, cops close in, businessman tries to frame good guy, and so on.When you watch this film, you could be forgiven with thinking that the makers have completely ripped off Wall Street, because the narrative flows in the same way that movie did, Guy thinks he's made it, but his world comes slowly crashing.Even the dad's get involved in both movies. To criticise this movie would be too easy, it's been done hundreds of times before, much better, but for a piece of fluff movie, with nice locations, and good looking people, you could do a lot worse.Timberlake isn't the best actor in the world, but he can hold his own, and he has decent chemistry with Arterton, who is really just there as a plot point to get Richie and Ivan in some sort of subliminal feud.If you thought Affleck was great in movies such as Paycheck (which he obviously did this movie for), Gigli, and Deception, you've got him back here. He's phoning it in, and you know he just took the part for the money, and the holiday.Mackie is the best thing here, bringing a little tension and humour to a stale narrative. It's a dud, for sure, but it's a guilty pleasure.Take a gamble.
