Reviews
Libramedi Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant
TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Senteur As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
mraculeated The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
TxMike This is a simple movie, probably very low budget, but it is filled with established actors. It features nine different women, and their lives. Each of the nine segments is one take, of about 11 to 13 minutes long. Some of the characters appear in two different segments, in connections which are very indirect. And that is what the "movie" is all about. It plays on the concept that we are all connected, humanity, there is a certain "continuity" there.A woman is in the Los Angeles jail, we learn that it isn't the first time, but the first one was a "mistake." Meaning this second one was deliberate.A middle aged woman (Sissy Spacek) has a partially disabled husband, and a sweet, intelligent high school daughter. She is about to have an affair at a cheap motel when she realizes what her life is really all about.A woman is struggling with her impending surgery for breast cancer. She is not being a very good patient, but her husband remains at her side.It is these kinds of stories told in this small movie, just nice to watch and consider.
SSBunny45 To think that this movie was not recognized by any bigger award nominations is astounding. The fact that this movie was not recognized or more popular nationally is heartbreaking. EVERY single actress and actor in this movie gave amazing performances. The audience felt the emotion in every single second, and it is a great testament to all of their talents. Sadly, many people will overlook this movie just because it wasn't popular. Words cannot describe the power and ache this movie leaves you feeling. You are saddened and left wanting more, and it is a great attribute of the film. You get just enough of a glimpse to understand these people, but you are still wondering more about each character as the movie progresses. I was blown away. This movie was written so wonderfully and you can feel the heart that was put into making it as well. This movie is a great representation of everyday struggles that women face, the heartache and the sadness that many have to deal with. It was so moving and just a great movie to watch and interpret. Leaves you thinking... GREAT!
WarpedRecord "Nine Lives" features outstanding performances and remarkable direction, but as with many films with multiple story lines, you're likely to become frustrated trying to piece the vignettes together.Similar in structure to Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" and the films of Alejandro González Iñárritu, who served as executive producer, "Nine Lives" features nine vignettes of women in emotional crises. Each scene is shot in a single take with a Steadicam, which is a remarkable achievement considering the elaborate choreography many of these scenes require. The performances are uniformly excellent, but special credit must be give to Robin Wright Penn as an expectant mother who runs into her old boyfriend in a supermarket and Lisa Gay Hamilton as a troubled young woman who has a score to settle with her father. Several of the characters make cameos in other scenes, but the film offers no great "voila" moments where all the relationships fall into place. While the whole of "Nine Lives" is less than the sum of its parts, this is a worthwhile film for its remarkable cast and well-directed scenes.
FilmCreature Nine Lives is a moving and mostly realistic drama set within the lives of nine different women. I didn't know what to expect when I rented it from Blockbuster, but I was very surprised, it is sad, but also very affecting. All of the actresses put in memorable performances, namely Holly Hunter, Robin Wright Penn, and Glenn Close. Hunter plays a woman with a jerk boyfriend who can be a prick to her sometimes. Penn plays Diana, who meets her old lover, Damian (Jason Isaacs) whom she should never have separated from. And Glenn Close plays an older woman who has a picnic in a cemetery with her daughter (Dakota Fanning). It is a film I will not soon forget, and I am glad to have rented it.3.5/4
