Reviews
Animenter There are women in the film, but none has anything you could call a personality.
Voxitype Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Cosmo Brockway I saw the hard hitting documentary Nefarious: Merchant of Souls for the second time last night at a screening in Soho, London. This film, remarkably written, directed and produced by Benjamin Nolot, does not get any easier on the second viewing. In just under two shocking hours we are taken on a whirlwind tour through one of the greatest scourges our 'advanced' civilisation has today, human sex trafficking. From the villages of Eastern Europe (in Moldova alone it is estimated TEN PERCENT of the population has been trafficked) to the seedy 'glamour' of Las Vegas casinos via Cambodian rural communities (seeing the vulnerable children being sold by their own families was particularly heartbreaking ) there is no let up to the visual punch we are thrown and I would defy anyone to walk away from these searing images without some small resolve to be part of bringing liberation to these modern day slaves. This film is highlighting a thread of a web that is engulfing us as a society, a web that thrives on secrecy and complicity, encompassing child abuse, prostitution and pornography, and one that is growing at a terrifying rate. The invisible people working at risk behind the scenes to bring change are true heroes of today, inheritors of the spirit that led Telemachus to a martyrdom which effectively ended gladiator sacrifice in Rome and self proclaimed 19th century 'fanatic for freedom' William Wilberforce to fearlessly combat slavery. The message of Nefarious is one that should be a call to arms for us all to join in eradicating each of these degrading violations of our fellow humans completely.
kevin scholes Very harrowing documentary , about a terrible truth -a reality , that is going on even as we speak . In our western world of ease and pleasure, freedom , security and peace in a relatively safe enjoyable society we live- in not far away young innocent girls are being forced into being slaves forced into having sex beaten and punished, if they don't comply. This documentary will shake you to the core , shows the evils of the mafia in eastern Europe and their involvement in organised crime , and the documentary shows this barbaric trade of human trafficking going on around the world . Everyone should watch this DVD it has got to be the worst thing going on in the world today, watching this will stir you into action to do something about it you'll never be the same again
ashleyleir Nefarious: Merchant of Souls, has been for me the most eye opening documentary I have ever seen. I believe it is critical to see this film to educate and begin to look into the in-workings of the global sex trade for what it is. What I deeply appreciate about the film Nefarious: Merchant of Souls, is that it takes you through so many different avenues of the global sex trade removing any boxes that may be potentially formed in our minds about Human Trafficking. It takes it from being a far away story to the brutal reality that happens not only "other nations" but in our own backyard. It looks not only at the issues but at the solutions as well, not leaving you with hopelessness on such a large problem, but with greater understanding and hope in your heart that, yes, there can and will be change. It is well thought out in its presentation, beautifully filmed, and easy to follow not jumping to and fro but a steady streamline of information that is heart-wrenching, hopeful, insightful, and inspirational. It not only needs to be watched over and over again, but you might as well add it to your library and share it with a friend. The world needs to know!
beatyorama Not only the best documentary I have seen on sex trafficking as of yet (and I've seen several, some much more visually explicit than this one), but perhaps the best documentary I have ever seen. It is truly heart-wrenching, your blood throbbing in your chest as you watch. The raw honesty of the film is breath-taking and kills pretense. The redemption and hope is so poignant that I am not sure I could keep from crying if I tried. Watch it, be convicted, and be kindled to do whatever you are able about this injustice. The film is undeniably focused on the teachings of Christ Jesus, and the way in which it is done takes the emotions to a level hard to achieve through visual media. I agree that Christ Jesus is our only hope. Praise God for his love!
