Huievest Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
Gary The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
Raul Faust It's been a while since the last time I saw a Brazilian picture, due to the bad experiences I had with them, in general, with too few exceptions. I'm familiarized with Paulo Gustavo's kind of humour, mainly if you consider that I've seen most "220 volts" episodes. Whether they admit it or not, "Minha Mãe é uma Peça: O Filme" feels like a huge episode of that show, with the movie's main star portraying his own mother in some supposedly fictional situations. Paulo Gustavo's acting in here is simply amazing, making it hard to remember that the mother portrayed in this was made by a MAN. He brought so much life to Dona Hermínia that it felt hard not to believe her and hard to not remember your own mother. There are some good situations that writers invented, like Juliano's sexuality throughout his life; even thought it was pretty evident he was a homosexual, his mother, when she could finally ask him if he was, stepped back. Also, the mom attempts on changing her children are very classic in mothers in general. However, as someone else has already said on IMDb, this isn't a comedy that will make a change in your life, but it's certainly an original work that will entertain you.
Claudio Carvalho In Niterói, the middle-class housewife Dona Hermínia (Paulo Gustavo) lives with her teenage son Juliano (Rodrigo Pandolfo), who is gay, and her teenage daughter Marcelina (Mariana Xavier), who is obese. Her husband Carlos Alberto (Herson Capri) has left her to live with a younger woman, the bimbo Soraia (Ingrid Guimarães). When Carlos Alberto and Soraia go to the club with Juliano and Marcelina in his sport car, Dona Hermínia overhears the "children" making fun of her and she decides to take a time out alone in the house of her aunt Zélia (Suely Franco) to calm down. Along the days, Dona Hermínia misses Juliano and Marcelina and tells stories of her life to Zélia. Meanwhile the siblings feel how much they need her at home. "Minha Mãe é Uma Peça" is a gross, corny but also funny comedy based on a successful play in Brazil. Although fictional, the plot is based on situations in Paulo Gustavo's live and the character Dona Hermínia is based on his own mother, Dona Déia. The funniest moment of this movie is in the credits, when there is a cameo of Dona Déia in a home footage. My vote is five.Title (Brazil): "Minha Mãe é Uma Peça" ("My Mother is a Piece of Work")
Alexandre L.C. Jr Honestly, I am very critical about comedy movies, especially Brazilian's ones, which are always full of jargon and clichés. This adaptation of Paulo Gustavo is excellent. Outstanding ! Is perfect his representation of his own mother, based in real stories, experienced by him. Paul's impeccable performance, as well as, Rodrigo Pandolfo and Mariana Xavier. Weak point was the performance of Ingrid Guimarães and Herson Capri, perhaps by their poor script that could have a little more spice ... lacked just that for me. Excellent, as everyone in the theater with me, we recognize some of our mothers this crazy and cute Mrs Herminia. I have expectation for a sequence. For me, the best Brazilian comedy until now. Ps.: Do not forget to see the final credits, there is a surprise!!
ricardopthomaz It's been a while since I last saw a Brazilian comedy. The fact is that most of comedies in my country just don't add up, they are just generic Globo TV "quality" formulas that are simply awful!! By word of mouth I decided to ignore my skepticism, take a deep breath and check this one out, and guess what? I had fun! I mean... I didn't watch the most brilliant comedy of my life, and it's still pretty generic, but it was better than most comedies that comes out in Brazil! There are flaws, and situations that just makes you cringe, but in general terms, I laughed, I had a good time with it.It's the kind of movie that illustrates the everyday problematic Brazilian family, there are stereotypes of Brazilian people in every direction you look at. So yeah, that's why I let that one pass. I could easily identify some very regular situations that I already seen around in my city with other families and I have to admit, the characters were mostly very likable, specially the mother! So yeah, it's a nice Brazilian comedy. Again, you won't have the laugher of your life, but you'll still have a good time with your friends and relatives.
