Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
KnotStronger This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
ActuallyGlimmer The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
Roman Sampson One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Wuchak Released in 2000, "Mr. Accident" stars Yahoo Serious as Robert Crumpkin, a geek and perpetual screw-up who works at an egg factor where the boss (David Field) is diabolically lacing the eggs with nicotine. Crumpkin unknowingly starts dating the boss' babe, Sunday Valentine (Helen Dallimore), which incurs his wrath. There's a subplot about Sunday's obsession with extraterrestrial life and a questionable hubcap which may or may not be of this earth. This is sort of an Australian version of various Jim Carrey comedies, like the Ace Ventura movies, in that Serious plays a goofy geek with an outlandish haircut and there's a lot of silly, slapstick humor and madcap antics. Thankfully, there's almost zero foul, vulgar verbiage. I understand why some people don't like the movie because of the quirky Australian humor that non-Australians have to adapt to and the relatively lame name of the movie. As far as the latter goes, while "Mr. Accident" is fitting, a better name would've been "Mr. Screw-up" or "Mr. Break-it." Another problem is that Robert Crumpkin just lacks the appeal of Ace Ventura and comes off more like Carrot Top's younger, naïve brother. I'm, however, giving the movie a solid rating because I found it consistently amusing once I got used to its unique Australian approach and sense of humor. The purpose of a comedy is to make you laugh and I laughed, even if a lot of it was laughing at how unbelievably goofy/silly/quirky it was. It was more roll-your-eyes laughing than laughing-out-loud, but nevertheless I laughed. Another great component is Helen as Sunday. She has a good supporting role and is just winsome and beautiful throughout. The film runs 89 minutes and was shot in Sydney, Australia.GRADE: B
aqya I don't know why this movie is so underrated! It was certainly one of the funniest movies I saw all of last year, and when I finally got a chance to come and rate it I see that it has a 3.8! Well, the acting isn't all that great, but the physical comedy is first rate. Lots of irons to the sides of heads and vacuum flamethrowers. And it's about eggs, come on, that gets it a good rating automatically. I bought this at Wal-Mart on the $5.50 rack, and it was the best investment I made that day. This Australian comedy flick is totally awesome, and I would suggest it to all my friends.Aqya's Rating: 10/10 Go see it! Go see it now!
freeangels Can the most naive, sweet but terribly accident prone bachelor in the world ever find love and break a couple of unpleasant bad habits at the same time? As he blunders into a devious plot to make the world of egg-users into nicotine addicts, he discovers the answer to all is Yes. Our first viewing of this movie left us smiling but not ready to place it on the "watch 100 times" shelf. However, the more we watched it, the more clever and funnier it proved itself to be. The entire roster of characters was perfectly cast. This movie was not widely distributed in the US, I suspect less to do with so-called lack of humor than it's undisguised concerns and feelings regarding cigarette smoking and addiction. I am sorry this movie was not more available to the general public: it took a long time to track down a copy of it, and I would love to share it with my sisters and their kids.
vchimpanzee After the MGM lion, the first words we see are 'A Serious Film'. Don't you believe it!As a child, Roger lived in a trailer, and his parents were cruel. They discouraged him from using his imagination, and because of the way he was brought up, he became obsessed with taking things apart. In the present, Roger lives in a high-rise apartment building. We are introduced to a very accident-prone man. Then he goes to work at The Big Egg. More chaos! We later learn the only reason he has a job is that he is friends with Lyndon, one of the executives. Early in the movie, Duxton takes over the company from his brother. Lyndon thinks Roger should go out and meet girls. So they go to a bar, and Roger's outfit makes a Hawaiian shirt look conservative. The night doesn't go too well, but Roger later meets Sunday, a dumb blonde who has moved into Roger's building. She was dating Duxton until he was a jerk. Sunday is actually quite smart at times, and she enjoys astronomy. This helps Roger get interested in the stars as well, but an even bigger influence on Roger is the Volkswagen hubcap he finds after one of his many accidents. At least the strange bald man SAYS it is a Volkswagen hubcap ...This was a very funny movie, though aside from Yahoo Serious and possibly Helen Dallimore and Grant Piro, I don't think anyone really could act. The physical comedy was good, but not spectacular. Every once in a while, Roger had a series of accidents. One of the best of these scenes involved a trash avalanche. There was also a string of mishaps in a restaurant, and Roger's pathetic car often provided laughs. No matter what, it would run. And the air bags worked. Eventually. What exactly DO you do when a waiter hands you the cork from your wine bottle? You won't believe what Roger did. And don't ask him to make you a cappucino while you're on the phone discussing exports. Especially if you want to make Chile one of your new markets. Duxton was a cruel, cruel man. He gave a new meaning to 'downsizing'. See, he took old refrigerators to a do-it-yourself recycling place. If he had a grudge ... The version I saw was cleaned up for TV, and there were still a few risque moments, but it wasn't too bad. There seemed to be a lot of bad language that had been edited, though. considering that this was a live-action cartoon, I would have thought it would be cleaner. This movie was good for laughs. Not a real quality production, but fun.
