Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
chirukiranu Shivaji Rao Gaekwad aka RAJNI the numero Super Star of Indian Cinema. Charisma is his definition and Style is his representation; that raw magnetism seduces scores of people into thronging the theaters across the globe. To top, his simplicity and earthy nature have augmented his ever growing fan base. No wonder, his movies were used as a case study to analyze the business of Indian cinema.Kabali is Pa Rajnith's 3rd directorial venture. He sure did taste success with his first two outings. Rajni is at his stylish best in Kabali. Pa Ranjit needs to be lauded undoubtedly for showcasing Rajni in such a sleeky classy way. The way Rajni is presented with thumping BGM sure gives you goose bumps and instantly raises decibel levels in the auditorium. Adrenaline pumping, electrifying, Pure Rajni delirium. Rajni's acting is top notch and is a discourse for all the current gen and upcoming artistes. Thaliava daa !!When you have a super star like RAJNI, half the battle is already won. The other half depends on how well you have unfolded the story. Pa Ranjit miserably fails in this aspect. The narration is dead slow even for a passionate moviegoer. Even a snail would have crawled faster. I could hear the seconds hand ticking on my watch. "Wtf, this is Rajni's movie dude. Don't do this Pa Ranjit" whined my Rajni frenzy mind and continued it's love-hate relationship with the director. There are so many scenes which could have been chopped off on the editing table. Also, to bring out the right emotions in a drama, you need to cast the right folks. Except for Thailava, Radhika Apte and Winston Chao all the other supporting cast were not up to the snuff. Music by Santosh Narayan is superb and Neruppu Da (I luv the tamil version) has already topped the chart busters and continues to enthrall music lovers around the world as I write about it. BGM impresses in bits.Someone told me that a picture is worth a thousand words....so here's Kabali graph /\___^^___/\ - The first 15 min movie sky rockets, then crashes like the stock market during a recession, next for a few blocks in between wakes you up from slumber and gives you the much required kick and finally the last 15 min provide you a proper adieu. Rest all is Hum Ka'Bali'. Neruppu Da gets dampened due to the icy cold storyline.Kabali was made for the love of a man. (fyi, 'For the love of a man' is a documentary made in 2015 exploring Rajni's craze). It's a decent attempt to showcase Rajni's trademark style and niagara the auditorium with his aura. Better focus on story and narration could have fully satiated the audience. If you have enough patience to remain idle in the dark for over an hr in an auditorium filled with hundreds of like minded fans, then try not to miss this one for RAJNI. PS: If you are uncertain of handling the in between 'bali', then the teaser is the best option. You can watch it umpteen times on youtube !!
Varun Chaudhary I'm afraid there's no other way to say it: Kabali is a drag. And that's because the man, oops, the Superstar of Superstars, a phrase used for Rajinikanth minus any irony, comes off same-old. Everything that Rajini does to spark untold hysteria amongst his die- hard fans is in here: the dress code ( three piece suits ), the dark glasses, the lines only Rajini can say, the kicks and punches only he can deliver. But the formula is now frayed and tired: there's neither swag nor swagger. There comes a time when even Rajini has to reinvent, and this is it. He has been playing In and As to such adulation for so long that his directors have long stopped bothering about such things as plot and characterisation. When Rajini is on and at it, who cares? Actually, let me amend that. Kabali does make an attempt at a plot. Kabaliswaran aka Kabali is the firebrand leader of a group of Tamil indentured labour in the Malaysian rubber plantations. A skirmish between the owners and the labour turns into a tragedy, and Kabali transforms from regular guy into an grizzled gang-boss. There could have been something there, given the history. But the treatment is both half-baked and half-hearted. Despite it being shot in Malaysia (new locations), the arch-villain being a local (new face), and the superstar given not one but two pretty young women (Apte as wife, Dhansika as daughter) as adoring satellites, this bloated, overlong enterprise cannot hide the fact that the superstar is distinctly slower, less nimble on his feet, making the holes in the film much more visible.
Astute Althean Let me start by saying that I am a great fan of Rajni films. I grew up watching his films. He was the real star who perfected commercial, mass films in the south. So, after Kochaidaiyaan, a really good story lost in mediocre computer animation, and Lingaa, a lackluster movie, came the teaser for Rajni's Kabali. Right from the start of the announcement of the movie I was excited. My expectations were meant. What many people failed to realize was that the director, Pa Ranjith, constantly repeated ,whenever he had a chance, that this is not going to be a Rajni film before the release of the movie. Where most people were misled, in a way, were the promotions for the movie which showcased the movie as a mass, commercial entertainer. Though I enjoyed the promotions, I took it with a grain of salt and I was right. The good: 1. Rajni- Rajni is known for his mannerisms and style, which is intact in the movie. But, after a long time, he emotes in this movie. The scenes where he sees his daughter and meets his wife after a long time showcased his acting chops and a different side of Rajni.2. Other actors- The movie had consistently good acting throughout ranging from the excellent part done by Radhika Apte to pulling off a gangster look and feel from Dhansika and the comedy relief provided by Dinesh, the movie had consistent acting throughout.3.Commercial elements - To satisfy the audience the director had a great intro scene ( probably the best intro since Sivaji), a good action scene following the intro scene , the "mass scene" where Rajni rams the car and the climatic fight, were planted throughout the movie.4. Story- This movie had a different take on a gangster's life. Rather than resorting to showing who is the boss , the movie explores the emotional aspect of a gangster and his emptiness without his family. The oppression of the Malay Tamil people was also touched upon but is not the primary focus of the movie. The not so good:1. Pacing- The movie suffered from pacing issues. The movie sometimes wound down to a crawl, which id not expected from a Rajni film.2. Editing? - Fast cuts and montage of scenes interwoven in quick succession can be used to speed up the plot. But , when it is used excessively, things get muddled and you are taken from the movie. The thing am reminded is when Rajni asks around for his daughter in the first half of the film which was conveyed by a bunch of scenes woven together. It pulled me out of the film for a while. Also, how kabali becomes a gangster is also conveyed in a same fashion.3.Wrong advertising- This movie should not have been advertised as a commercial movie at all. The producer tried to cash in the fame of Rajni and did so which led to the mixed reviews with which the movie opened with. But, once families flocked to the theater everyone saw the movie for what it was.4. Vfx - The vfx in the movie was spotty. The car explosion and the back-shot of Malaysia in the climax were mediocre at best.Verdict - A story of a gangster's search for his family with commercial movements mixed in. 8/10
rajvigneswarankaneysan The movie revolves around an ageing don in Malaysia who is in search of lost life. The dialogues and screenplay stayed very true to current culture in Malaysia which gives this movie an authenticity. Unlike the usual Rajnikanth film, this one has new young and talented casts which is refreshing. It also portrays Superstar Rajnikanth in a whole new dimension that we have never seen before. Radhika Apte, particularly has done a brilliant job in this movie. The music is in touch with the emotional connection of the story. The fight scenes in this movie is commendable because of the realistic touch (particularly involving Rajnikanth). With great acting, engaging storytelling and realistic fight scenes, it gives good cinematic experience. This movie is a milestone in Tamil Film Industry. It's definitely one of the best movies in Indian Cinema.
