. . . than in 2016 America. GOING! GOING! GOSH! is just another in a long line of Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes animated short tributes to Wile C. Coyote (a.k.a., "Carnivorus Vulgaris," a.k.a. Donald Trump). Just as The Donald always is scheming to order Mexican Walls from Acme Corp. (probably a Trump subsidiary), C.O.D., or to supply Japan, South Korea, and the 117 NATO nations with their own Nukes (from Acme, of course), Mr. Coyote is continually diagramming his plans to Eat Roadrunner Steak Again. True, Wile's blueprints are far more sophisticated than any of the Trial Balloons Trump has tried to pump up to date, but there's a lot to be said for The Donald's K.I.S.S. Principle (that is, the dates with witch he's been pictured on various "Kiss Cams" down through the years). In a few ill-advised later Coyote Cartoons, Wile actually speaks--and he sounds EXACTLY like Mr. Trump. "I am a Genius. My brain is Soooo Huuuuge, because that's the kind of brain that we Geniis have. Even my business card says 'I am a Genius.'" This is a direct quote from one such short. Hopefully, Wile will run this year on the True Blue Conservative Party ticket, so that he can debate The Donald. Then everyone will know what an Echo Chamber sounds like!

"Going! Going! Gosh!" is another fine Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote cartoon. Lots of luck, Coyote! You're gonna need it.My favorite sequence in this cartoon occurs at the very end of a high mountain road, where the Coyote paints a picture on a huge canvas to make it appear as if the road still continues. But, as is always the case, the Road Runner runs right through the painting. Then a big truck emerges from the painting and runs over the frustrated Coyote, who then tries to run through the painting and falls off a cliff. The smoke trails from his fall form the words "OH, NO!" I also like how the Coyote disguises himself as a lady hitchhiking while the song "Carry Me Back to Old Virginy" plays in the background. Of course, the Road Runner merely runs him over and snatches his wig.Contemporary cartoonist Matt Groening ("The Simpsons", "Futurama") had the right idea about the background desert paintings in these Road Runner cartoons: They look so great that you'd want to be there!

Chuck Jones's 'Going! Going! Gosh!', the third cartoon in the Road Runner series, has the invigorating feel of a series coming to life. 'Fast and Furry-ous' established the characters and 'Beep Beep' experimented with different forms and lengths of joke but 'Going! Going! Gosh!' feels like the first classic Road Runner. The quality of gags has risen significantly in this outing and the animation is also a cut above. There are a couple of reused gags even at this early stage but the sheer vivaciousness of the animation and direction breathe new life into them. This may be my favourite example of the oft used logic-defying painted landscape gag, for instance. This is Road Runner as it is most fondly remembered: quick fire, fast paced and very funny, even when you can see the punch line coming a mile away. 'Going! Going! Gosh!' provides an equal amount of gags where you go "I knew that was going to happen" and ones where you go "Oh, I didn't see that coming". It keeps the viewer on their toes, ensuring there's never a chance to get bored. It's the thrilling moment that the Road Runner series really found its feet.

It's amazing the number of ploys that Wile E. Coyote tries - and has backfire - in just a s six- and-a-half half minute cartoon. The beating the poor guy takes each time is unbelievable, but have you seen a more determined character in a cartoon? One that doesn't let defeat discourage him? I'd like to see him win, just one time.In this cartoon, he gets blasted by not just one, but two big trucks, along with an assortment of other things including the ever-present anvil. For some reason, I laughed loudest at the quick-drying cement routine. This cartoon is part of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 2, and can be seen on disc 2.
