Vikas SS Bollywood audiences have recently been exposed to mix of short stories with Darna Mana Hai, Darna Zaroori hai, Salam-E-Ishq, etc. In comparison, 10 stories here don’t have a common thread. Well, I don’t say that a good storyteller doesn’t need two hours and five songs to make his point, but this movie should have delivered better.But sadly, barring three to four stories, others were a mere waste of time or waste of talent. Adding to the plight was the predictability in most stories. One actually ends up counting x down and 10-x to go. The filmmakers though deserve credit for coming up with the concept of 10 short stories with a twist in the end, a new in Hindi Cinema.In brief on the tolerable of the lot: (1) Matrimony: Mandira Bedi, a bored wife of an MNC Banker Arbaaz Khan has found a way to spend her Thursdays but meets her match in the end. Maybe I appreciated it because it was the first of the ten stories and it doesn’t have any gyan or tears.(2) Zahir: A budding writer Manoj Bajpai gets interested in her neighbor Dia Mirza, reacts about something and ends up in a path of no return. Nothing great, but decent! (3) Pooranmashi: A story of Amrita Singh who following her heart just for once and messes everything for her daughter Minissha Lamba. Comparatively OK! (4) Lovedale: Aftab finds his love Neha Uberoi through destiny’s twist. The end was absolutely predictable but I at least liked since it was the only happy ending of the ten.The ones which were really intolerable: (5) High on the Highway: Jimmy Shergill and Masumeh are seen high on drugs throughout their entire screen time, both very jarring. The portrayal was sick. (6) Rise and Fall: Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty are stereotype dons who meet a predictable end. They mostly played their roles with tons of boredom thrown in.(7) Sex on the Beach: Dino Morea finds a mysterious woman on a beach and invites him home for you know what. The end is a typical thriller with lots of skin show.(8) Strangers in the Night: Neha Dhupia and Mahesh Manjrekar are a couple who narrate deep secrets every anniversary. The dialogues & the twist were too cheap.(9) Rice Plate: Shabana Azmi and Naseruddin Shah in a confusion over a rice plate set against their divergent religious backgrounds. Remember the story on biscuits? (10) Gubbare: Nana Patekar who goes on an on about how he bought his wife balloons to end quarrels. I guess Nana Patekar too has become boringly predictable off late.
kooleshwar Wow a Sanjay Gupta film that has not copied everything down to the dialogue, a movie that has been inspired only in concept.Excited as i sound i am a veteran of 100s of movies and i was not going to let this point and the stellar cast send my expectations sky high, I've seen enough great experiments in India and seen almost of all of them fail at some level.I went into this movie with a level head, the movie opened with the standard westernized all English credits and the first line of the movie was in English and i knew i was in trouble.MISTAKE NO 1 AND 2 ALL English CREDITS large no of English dialogues AND ALL TO HEAVY WESTERN INFLUENCE.Still the first segment had some potential even though it was predictable.MISTAKE NO 3 EACH AND EVERY SEGMENT WAS PREDICTABLE SOME PREDICTABLE DOWN TO THE DIALOGUES.Then came a flurry of segments and another mistake surfaced...MISTAKE NO 4 MOST OF THE TIME NO ONE REALLY CARED, high on the highway maybe, high on interest FAR FROM IT.One segment after the other rattled of some promised but never delivered but what was shocking was that many never ever even promised...MISTAKE NO 5 just because a friend thinks of story doesn't mean it has any potential SHOCKINGLY MANY STORIES DIDN'T EVEN HAVE POTENTIAL FOR ENTERTAINMENT obviously chosen to make people happy then for actual entertainment value.The acting was actually good though, even a few unknown faces and people otherwise not know for their acting talent (aftab, masumeh) put up decent performances on that front there can be no complaints.But the constant pans, fish eye lens off colour finish etc distracted more than added to the appeal.MISTAKE NO 6 JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A TOOL Doesn't MEAN YOU HAVE TO USE IT, You've GOT YOUR SHORT STORIES TO PLAY WITH, YOU Don't HAVE TO PLAY WITH EVERY FILM MAKING TECHNIQUE TO GO WITH IT.Some of the segments with packed with stars, one of the only ones i liked had 2 big names, Shabana and Nasseer, IMHO this was the only good segment in the entire film, it may not have scored big on the twist but it scored huge on impact value, but the other big names weren't able to salvage other segments.MISTAKE NO 7 JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE BIG STARS AND GREAT ACTORS Doesn't MEAN YOU CAN SALVAGE A WAFER THIN STORY, the Nana Patekar Segment was one of the least effective yet a finger cannot be raised on any of the actors.The dialogues were good but while the heavy use of English annoyed most of the times, they were actually old school and heavy at other times, there was hardly the feeling of a conversation in many of them.MISTAKE NO 8 HIRING OLD SCHOOL HEAVIES AND USING GIMMICKS LIKE FLASHY English AND ABUSES Doesn't REALLY IMPROVE THE SCRIPT IN ANY MANNER.The movie may have failed on many level but one thing Sanjay Gupta always delivered was a stellar soundtrack, album after album was experimental but each one was a hit, psychedelic remixes, traditional rock, Bollywood Masala everything was just right, but for the first time since i can remember a Sanjay Gupta album will not be a superhit, Except for Jaaniye i don't see a single super hit song and even this one isn't enough to carry the whole movie.MISTAKE NO 9 YOU CANT AFFORD TO FAIL IN YOUR BIGGEST STRENGTH I WOULD LIKE TO GO ON A LIMB AND SAY THAT SANJAY GUPTA IS SINGLE HANDEDLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE NEW WAVE OF Hindi MUSIC, AND THERE IS NOT A SINGLE MOVIE OF HIS WHOSE ALBUM I Wouldn't BUY EXCEPT FOR THIS THIS ONE, BIG BIG MISTAKE.However you cannot deduct any marks for attempt, hats off to him to resist ripping another DVD of another hit film and risk money instead trying to push Indian cinema forward.However this in no way merits going to a theatre to see this movie especially in light of the sky rocketing multiplex prices (280 rs at Inox), if you have to see it it has to be in less than 80 Rs or on TV or DVD.Which brings us to the last mistake...MISTAKE NO 10 WHY O WHY DID YOU HAVE TO FIGHT WILL ALL YOUR FRIENDS ESPECIALLY SANJAY DUTT JUST BEFORE THE RELEASE OF YOUR MOVIE, I MEAN DIYA MIRZA NEHA DHUPIA JIMMY SHERGIL JUST Don't HAVE THAT IMPACT DO THEY, YOU JUST LOST YOUR TRUMP CARD MR GUPTA.-s read the mistakes in the review, most of the scripts were the biggest criminals for me.+/-s DO I REALLY CARE?.+s Superb Attempt even as a mistake it will at least set a precedent in the stagnating industry, the Shabana -Nasseer segment was very good, a couple were OK, good/great acting most of the time.total 4/10 (mostly for attempt it did fall below my low expectations and that has been factored in, please don't expect anything from this movie, just think of it as promoting different cinema).
ronak_15 A good attempt to bring something different to the bollywood community.Sanjay Gupta and others have made a risky attempt to come up with something that is not usual or expected in the current trend of bollywood.Ten different stories. No doubt about learning from them but only for half a dozen; rest really do not make an impact. It is a great effort by all and as well all know with some expceptions....Here we go...!!!!Matrimony starring Mandira Bedi, Arbaaz Khan -- Nice one. Good to start with. Better begun is half done.....(5/10) Pooranmashi starring Amrita Singh, Minnisha Lamba -- Great acting. You get along this "kahani" . (6/10) High on the Highway starring Jimmy Shergill -- Don't quite remember what was in it... worst of the bunch (0/10)Stranger in the Night starring Neha Dhupia, Mahesh Manjerakar -- A so so story to all the wicked minds....but positive lesson .. (4/10)Zahir starring Manoj Bajpai, Diya Mirza - A good lesson for the young generation to understand whats going on in others mind..... (5/10)Lovedale starring Aftab Shivdasani -- A story every lover will like... But I didn't find it so interesting... will give it a friendly... (5/10)Sex on the Beach starring Dino Morea -- I recommend you to grab a plate of samosas for your family/friends while this is going on....I know the title will not allow you to do this but there is nothing in this.... (1/10)Gubbare starring Nana Patekar -- This story is among the half dozen that I like out of 10. Nothing to describe about it...watch it.. (7/10)Rice Plate starring Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah -- Simply great acting and great direction. Nice message. (8/10) This much just for the message.Rise & Fall starring Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty -- I am a great fan of Sanjay Dutt but I could not digest the story line so (4/10) is enough.Summary : Look out for these KAHANI'sMatrimony, Pooranmashi, Zahir, Gubbare, Rice Plate, LovedaleTry to IgnoreHigh on the Highway, Sex on the BeachWill have different opinions over Stranger in the Night (Good narration), Rise and Fall
Punkaj Jaju You can blame Sanjay Gupta for making violent movies, based on the underworld or the bizarre. But one needs to give him credit for doing stuff thats not too run-of-the-mill.Having gathered a young crew of directors, mostly novice, comprising of Meghna Gulzar (Just Married), Apoorva Lakhia (Shootout at L'wala/Ek Ajnabee), Rohit Roy amongst others, Gupta gives them less than 15 minutes time to showcase his own concepts.The collection opens with MATRIMONY (4/10). Mandira Bedi is surprisingly good.Next up is HIGH ON THE HIGHWAY (1/10). Jimmy Shergil gets irritating.POORANMASHI (3/10) brings Meghna on who gets a good job from Amrita Singh. Lamba is wasted. Nice rural touches.STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT (4/10) gets one added star for its narrative style. It is made to deceive. But unbelievable. Manjrekar disappoints as the husband.The last pre-intermission segment is ZAHIR (4/10) and this one disappoints. Crudely shot by Gupta. Manoj Vajpayee is uninterested & way below-par.LOVEDALE (4/10) is a slow tale and you can smell the super-natural halfway through the story. Anupam Kher is wasted.Apoorva Lakhia's SEX ON THE BEACH (1/10 is the worst of the lot. Poor performances. Crudely presented.RICE PLATE (9/10) by debutante Rohit Roy is a pleasant surprise. Roy infuses immediate charm and is considerably helped by Shabana Azmi's brilliant portrayal of an orthodox religious Southie. Azmi takes just a few frames to warm up but ends up in control. Naseer Shah is understated. (This, in fact, is 'borrowed' from a Jeffrey Archer short story).GUBBARE (3/10) is passable only because of Patekar. Gulzar's script doesn't really shine. Nana is a natural.RISE & FALL (5/10) has two stories intertwined (gets very confusing too). Lots of style. I personally found Suniel Shetty a notch above than Dutt. The two teenage taporis are really good.Overall worth a look. Technical values are pretty good. Some segments have good editing but sound designing is improper for this genre.
