What a freaking movie. So many twists and turns. Absolutely intense from start to finish.
Sammy-Jo Cervantes
There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

I wonder if it's just me, because lately most Malayalam movies that come out (or I come across) have heavily corny acting and I think Charlie was a perfect example of this phenomenon. Great cast, cinematography and direction, but the acting, dialogues and story line pushed the authenticity of the movie way too far and questionable. The protagonist, Charlie (played by Dulquer Salmaan), supplies a fair amount of suspension of disbelief and cringe to the viewer in every single scene he's in. Charlie's a wanderlust do-gooder, somewhat like an overenthusiastic male version of Amélie Poulain (from Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain -2001), who's motto is to live-free spirited and do random acts of kindness throughout his life journey . In the end it all looked like here's these two young people, who so badly want to seem 'cool' and 'free-spirited' and try too hard, way too hard to look that way. I really like Parvathy as a public figure and admire her courage to express solidarity with her fellow actress who became victim to sexual assault by men in the industry. I also used to love Parvathy's acting in her previous movies, especially in Poo (2008) and Take Off (2017). However, with all said, it was a real bummer to see her character falling apart like this in Charlie. On the contrary, Aparna Gopinath plays her role (which isn't a leading one) in way more impressionable and realistic manner and every now and then her role helps the viewer to get a grip back to reality in this conceptually corny yet visually beautiful mess.
I hope the trend of corny acting and storytelling dies out soon in Malayalam cinema and we get renaissance in the industry where film makers seek to create content that's technologically empowered as well as conceptually authentic, like in the times of Bharathan, Padmarajan, K. G. George etc. (fingers crossed)

Once a wise man said, ' search with your best effort, search in every corner, search with a feeling, feeling that runs through your veins , feeling for what you are seeking. Search and search and Search. " No doubt , for the past two years, I have been a movie holic, and I hope it will remain the same.I have learned so many things, so many views, and there's a vast ocean of that awaiting for me to dive into it.Every Good movie is interconnected, whether it's Malayalam or Iranian, Argentine or Hollywood , Korean or German. You just have to search and search and search! Charlie, name of a mystery, an enigma to be unfolded by a beautiful girl who accidentally gets to know him by his unfinished Sketchbook story, discovers a nomad yet so beautiful young lad who sees things differently. He is kind of a mixture of humayun's himu character and landon from highway to heaven.

Travel, adventure, standing up and fighting injustices heroically, being one with people from poorer or less fortunate sections of society, being able to express the goodness in oneself boldly and completely, not being confined to small predictable lives - these are all longings that will resonate with a lot of people. Charlie fulfills all these beautifully, providing the viewer some emotional satisfaction. Cinema as a business is built around it's ability to be an escape from the boring routines and predictabilities of life. Charlie fits the business model nicely. Dulqar is the star of the movie. The movie rests squarely on his shoulders. If he had not delivered, the movie had absolutely no chance. I think this is his best performance so far. He has effectively challenged himself by rising above just being a behavior actor. He is a star. His likability sold. His work on his physique shows. His dialogue delivery is endearing. Charming fellow.Parvathy is an awesome actress. She has a very crucial role as well. She has much more screen time than Dulqar though the movie revolves fully around DQ. She is beautiful and has kept her presence sweet throughout the movie. The situations in the movie were not predictable though not all of them were totally new. The story line has been drawn very carefully, wary of the viewer and holding some tricks up the sleeve all the way. Spotted with interesting incidents, the movie is a feel gooder. The movie has good art work. I will not be surprised if the movie wins awards for it's art work in addition to many others. The sets are interesting. Lot of nice objects have been used to tell the story of the movie. The songs are impressive and is at par with the movie. Coming at pretty regular intervals, the movie is kept pleasant and musical all through. Cinematography is excellent. The movie has been written to use lot of beautiful/ varied / striking sights and the camera has captured them nicely - be it the saturated colors of fort kochi, the striking costumes, pooram. However, the fact of the matter is that the movie is quite sublime and just whiffs off pretty quickly. It was not meant to be deep or leave a lasting impact. It is just a nice roller coaster ride into Charlie's life. I would see it again.

The movie has turned out to be a visual treat filled with happiness as the movie will make you leave the theatre with a with a peaceful smile on your face . As the name suggest 'Charlie' is the protagonist of the story played by Dulquer Salman, the movie begins when 'Tessa' (Parvathy) leaves her home and later comes to know of Charlie she develops a curiosity to know more about Charlie and the rest forms the story. The movie evolves to be a feel good movie which delivers a refreshing experience. The first half is equipped with all the elements that can build a curiosity not only among Tessa, but also among the audience, and the film improves as it enters the second half which reveals more about the character of Charlie. 'Charlie' is not an easy character to portray but Dulquer Salman proves he is the perfect man for the job his new and different look along with excellent costume designs by Sameera Saneesh not only adds to the character of Charlie but has also managed to create a great buzz in the town about the film much before the release. Dulquer Salman once again proves that he is that kind of an actor who keeps on improving with his films. The movie is power packed with many other powerful characters played by Nadumedi Venu who once proves that he is one of the finest character actors in the industry Kalpana, Aparna Gopinath, Soubin and Tovino Thomas who crafted their characters to perfection.Martin Prakkat seems to have improved a lot as a director compared to his previous flicks, as directing a movie like Charlie is not an easy job as it requires a different perspective of thinking, he has found success in delivering a refreshing experience. Jomon T John impresses with his colourful frames and has done a terrific job in capturing the colours of Kochi and the scenic beauty of Munnar. The art director Jayashree Lakshmi Naryanan deserves a special applause for her stunning elements which takes the movie to a different level the script by Unni R does an excellent job in bringing perfection to the characters in the movie. Charlie stands out in its editing the editor Shameer Muhammed has done an excellent job in moulding a visual treat.
