NekoHomey Purely Joyful Movie!
Curapedi I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Aedonerre I gave this film a 9 out of 10, because it was exactly what I expected it to be.
Marva-nova Amazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
jjnxn-1 Glue footed travesty that makes a mockery of the very films it sets out to honor. Bogdanovich has seemingly no understanding of the genre and even if the cast were better the film would still be deeply flawed. A very few performers acquit themselves without shame, unsurprisingly they are old pros Mildred Natwick, John Hillerman and too a lesser extent Eileen Brennan. Madeleine Kahn tries her best and isn't terrible but the songs aren't suited to her unique brand of talent and the direction does her no favors. Duilio Del Prete is a nonentity who makes no impression. That leaves the leads who are awful both separately and together. Reynolds at least seems to be giving it the old college try the problem being that he can neither sing nor dance and shares zero chemistry with Cybill Shepherd. Early in her career here she is hopelessly out of her depth, in time she was able to perform a song with at least a little finesse, not here. She also dances with no grace whatsoever and is stiff in her scenes, the movie stops dead whenever she is on screen. A mess!
dougdoepke Is the movie as bad as Golden Turkey Awards claims. You bet it is. I'd rather sit through two hours of test pattern than endure this slow-motion train wreck again. It does for Hollywood musicals what the Titanic did for ocean cruises. Folks who think this is a misunderstood masterpiece are probably also kind to house flies. I just wish the movie were laughably bad, like an Ed Wood misfire. But it's not. Instead, it's almost painful to witness a Cole Porter score get butchered by performers about as musical as I am. I just hope writer-producer-director Bogdanovich learned a few humbling lessons from the experience. One thing for sure— I'll bet no studio gave him six million to play with after this. My advice—watch the movie only if the alternative is two hours of a political speech.
dscat1029 I was in the Navy in 1968 and flew out of San Diego to LA as the first leg to NY's JFK. We landed at LAX to take on more passengers. I was in uniform and sitting in 14C. As the new passengers were looking for their seats, I noticed two beautiful gals approaching my aisle. They looked at the seat number I rose and they sat in 14A and B as luck would have it. Off to JFK we flew. We chatted and by the time we landed we exchanged telephone numbers. I was back in San Diego in 2 weeks and the two sisters were back in LA around the same time. I called, and to make a long story short, Maria Cokkinos, perhaps the same person in this musical, became my dating partner and friend for a couple of years. Till this day (2012) I have 3 original pictures of her, 8x11 glossies. They look professionally done Once I was discharged from the Navy and returned home to NYC we lost contact. If anyone knows her or her family and would like to contact me please feel free to do so. The pictures belong with her family. Don Scaturro (Dscat1029@aol.com)
ianlouisiana Peter Bogdanovich was annoyingly clever and annoyingly young. His girlfriend was the annoyingly beautiful Cybille Shepherd and he had made an annoyingly large amount of money from his annoyingly successful films. Naturally the vultures were gathering. They swooped on "At long last love". They gorged themselves on malice and envy(he'd been a critic too)and, when they'd picked his bones clean he was never quite the same man. It isn't a masterpiece - it's far too idiosyncratic - but it is a brave experiment, unpolished leads tackling sophisticated material backed up by good old pros doing their schtick.Live musical numbers making up in spontaneity what they lacked in well rehearsed technical excellence. It certainly isn't one of the "Great Musicals" either.Let's concentrate on what it is.It's fun,it's tuneful,it's energetic,it has two wonderful performers - Eileen Brennan and Madeleine Kahn - and a lot of enthusiastic if not particularly expert hoofing from Mr Reynolds and Miss Shepherd. It's got some good lines and the costume design is terrific. 30 years on,Burt Reynolds is sending himself up in a good-natured way and Cybille Shepherd is still annoyingly beautiful. I've only ever seen it on TV here in the uk once.If it comes on again -carpe diem.
