Micah Lloyd Excellent characters with emotional depth. My wife, daughter and granddaughter all enjoyed it...and me, too! Very good movie! You won't be disappointed.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
ajrcvr My summary pretty much says it, but visually, this movie is stunning, if not quite at the Disney-Pixar level, but is is definitely something you will want to follow, and hopefully will pave the way for all future Japanese animation. A little more expensive to make, but it is worth the effort. The story is not the most original - basically man vs machine, or cyborg, and what does it mean to be human (a theme Shirow Masamune tackled with GITS) - but it is still captivating and never bores you. They could have developed the characters a little more, especially Deunan and Hitomi, but then they would have had to cut some other stuff. Developing characters is tough for writers & directors in a movie, because you don't want to slow the pace down. It certainly can be done, but it takes talent and effort to do it and balance everything out. Perhaps that is nitpicking here in this offering. Most simply, it is something that is very well done and definitely worth your while to see.
Criticman12 Computer Animation and Anime are both interesting anime and most anime show's that are being released recently are combining Hand-Drawn Animation with Computer Animation. But here's a question: Have you ever wanted to see a computer-animated film with anime-looking characters? Well now you can with, "Appleseed". Based on the Manga by the same name. The movie follows the story about a warrior named, Deunan Knute, who get's plucked from fighting and find's herself in a futuristic town called, Olympus. She also discovers that half-human and half-clone citizens known as, Bioroids, live in the city. She soon teams up with her cyborg boyfriend, Briareos, to find a source of energy called, Appleseed. This film really blew me away mostly because of the animation. It was incredible. I even found the characters, Deunan and Briareos, cool. I also liked the story.I can't say much about this film because it was really amazing. This film is definitely worth watching if you're an anime fan or someone looking for a good sci-fi movie to watch.
zanicka I have been searching the "lost" animated movies for something quite interesting and have been quite delighted to find this one. Animation is not TOO good although they are trying - I assume is due to the brutally long time in terms of computer animation since this movie was made - but post catastrophic check, dark environment check, massive new weapons check, cute main characters check, the point where you do not know whether it is machines trying to eliminate humans or humans eliminating machines or each other or WHAT? check:) Watch on a weekday with a glass of cider after a long day and you wont complain. It is like enjoying Ms Peckman:) Cheers!
CrassActionHero Appleseed(2004) Review: This is the new wave. Motion capture is taking storm and it looks good, but beauty is only skin deep.....Appleseed is none too different then the usual cliché. You will notice right away that it's beautiful. The first anime I saw that finally used motion capture instead of animation. No question it looks fantastic, but it's ultimately wasted here due to a flat and cliché story. For example, our hero is the ultimate fighter, has special parents, is significant to our story, and cliché villainy. I would like something original like maybe our hero is a nobody and has no special significance to the story and had worthless or just regular parents and nothing more. The clichés were just too much for me to digest. Also things get a little to over-dramatic as well. The action is good, but not enough. With the use of motion capture and the stunning visuals, I wanted more action. The Last Word: It's worth looking at, but that's it. This is otherwise nothing special. The use of motion capture and the visuals are impressive. I would like to see this art used more often. Hopefully next time, we get a good and original story.
