Diagonaldi Very well executed
TrueJoshNight Truly Dreadful Film
SparkMore n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
bobsgrock Mike Leigh's cinema is certainly not for everyone, especially those unwilling to look deep within the human emotion pool and see their own reflection. In his most recent work, he brings together practically all of his directing powers, culminating in a very serious, and sometimes charming, story focusing on a loving couple and the various sorts they have remained friends with over the years.Like so many of the greatest directors, Leigh has established a strong rapport with a small collection of actors, resulting in very strong performances every time out. Here, frequent collaborators Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen and Lesley Manville shine in their respective roles, particularly Manville as an alcoholic, depressed, middle-aged woman clinging to the one relationship in her life that has any meaning or happiness. As the film progresses, albeit without any sort of manufactured "plot," we witness life as it really is: strange, funny, at times exhausting and stressful, yet having the possibility of being rewarding and worthwhile. Though this may not be Leigh's absolute best work (my initial response to that would be All or Nothing), it does ring true as a definite Mike Leigh film. It explores the entire spectrum of human feeling and behavior, yet it doesn't do this in a cynical or manipulative manner. Rather, it seems to unfold naturally and coherently. It views us all as similar in the sense that we are subjected to this world and its cruelty, yet it is possible to attempt to rise above it through reaching out in love and compassion. Not sentimental, just hopeful.
sergepesic There are very few filmmakers like Mike Leigh these days. It is all about pretty people pretending to be interesting, and failing at it miserably. Mike Leigh hires magnificent character actors that Great Britain seems to have an abundance of, and simply tells a story. Ordinary people with ordinary lives, loving and hating, laughing and aching, living and dying." Another Year" is just a big slice of life. Four seasons of lives of several people. All very simple, at first sight, but rich and fragrant and truly complex, as meaningful things usually are. And actors...Absolutely perfect every single one of them. But Lesley Manville stands out in a role of needy drunken friend Mary. If there was ever an actor deserving an Oscar-this women is. Precise, irritating and heartbreaking. A masterpiece...
tlonuqbar This a quite worth film to watch, but please: do not watch it if you are in the mood for a comedy. This is just plain drama: human's emotional misery & dysfunctional family & friendship relationships. REALITY really is shown here. It's actors give an amazing, heart-felt performance, every & each of them, capable of long & close shots, showing the transformation in themselves. If you watch this film & you liked it, you might want to watch - Muriel's wedding - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110598/ - Young adult - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1625346/ - Greenberg - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1234654/ - Me and You and Everyone We Know - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415978/
thomai-494-892890 When my significant other suggested this film, I went into a process of immediate Denial:'' British Film? NO way!'' then to accept and shear happy-madness. I am glad I gave it a chance. It was a film with a point, a meaning, but OK it does evolve gradually! As I said earlier, this is a film which easily can be associated with mere modern films, such as: 'Young Adult'. Why ONLY read a book, when you have been victimized by such perpetrators, when you can set real pictures in unspoken words and feelings. Finally someone got, how it is and dares to move away from cheesy Hollywood cliché endings. Come on! Women have actually evolved since 'Friends' series and can appreciate the truth/reality.
