Laikals The greatest movie ever made..!
Exoticalot People are voting emotionally.
Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Jackson Booth-Millard I remember the title clearly from the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, probably because of what I assumed was a misspelling of the word "phoenix", it was apparently "sensational" in its day, needing severe cuts, I just hoped for something worth my time. The film opens with news broadcaster Clete Roberts interviewing many of the actual participants of the real-life event, before it moves on to showing the acted version of events. Basically the story takes place in Phenix City, Columbus, a corrupt town in Alabama, run by a crime syndicate, with growing prostitution and crooked gambling, it is referred to as the Sin City of the South. Lawyer Albert L. Patterson (John McIntire) has big plans for his son John (Richard Kiley) and his family when they return home after his military service in Germany. John is surprised at how so little has changed since he's been away, his father assures him that he won't know the mob are running things, as long as he minds his own business. But this proves to be hard for John, he is severely beaten by mob thugs, after trying to help two members of a civic reform from being harmed. Albert comes to realise that things need to change, he is urged to run for office and clean up Phenix City. He obtains the nomination to run as State Attorney General, but as soon as he elected following a successful campaign, he is killed in cold blood by the mob. It is up to John to avenge his father, at the risk of the rest of his family being in danger, he uses the law instead of violence to make change. Also starring Kathryn Grant as Ellie Rhodes, Edward Andrews as Rhett Tanner, Lenka Peterson as Mary Jo Patterson, Biff McGuire as Fred Gage, Truman Smith as Ed Gage, Jean Carson as Cassie, Kathy Marlowe as Mamie and John Larch as Clem Wilson. The opening newsreel footage adds extra emphasis to the true-life origins, it is an interesting story of corruption, investigation and political change, I admit there were only a couple of eye-catching bits, especially the bloody murders and lawbreaking moments, but overall it is not a bad documentary style crime drama. Worth watching, at least once!
JoeB131 This film is set in post-War Alabama, in a city that serviced Ft. Benning, GA.It's a semi-documentary, but the facts are so obscure people probably think this is the real story. Clean living crusaders take up against a corrupt gang who run prostitution and gambling on 14th Street. When they feel threatened, the gangsters start fighting back, killing some people, but eventually losing. Or something. What is interesting is just how gritty this movie is for 1955. There are multiple uses of the N-word, a bunch of fights, an implied rape, a bunch of murders. What doesn't work out well are the semi-"Documentary" scenes in the beginning of the film that tell you this is a "true" story. Besides giving away the plot, they aren't well shot and look kind of sloppy.
kenjha This documentary style crime drama is based on the true events in Phenix City, Alabama in the early 1950s. In fact there is a talky prologue that consists of a series of interviews that goes on much too long and adds nothing to the film. The film itself is quite interesting, marked by gritty cinematography and a rapid pace. Given the vintage of the film, the violence is shockingly brutal, particularly when targeted at women and children. The main shortcoming is the uneven acting. McIntire is fine, but most of the cast is pretty bad. Kiley is the main culprit here, chewing the scenery as a gung-ho military vet intent on cleaning up his home town.
Boba_Fett1138 This movie isn't as slick looking as a normal average Hollywood production. It obviously had a low budget to spend and did not had the most talented and best known actors involved. But this all works to the movie its own advantage really. It gives the movie a certain raw edge and also realism. This movie doesn't progress as a normal Hollywood movie, with the usual melodramatic undertones. It's a movie that doesn't waste any time and is a real straight-forward one. It's a quite daring movie because it isn't afraid to show things as they really are. The town in this movie is a real rotten one, with corruption and crime everywhere. It's all also really based on true events, which happened just very shortly before the movie began shooting. It was a fast made movie, which made it also a relevant one at its time. In a way you could say that this is a movie as well as a documentary and news-reel. Also since at the start of the movie some of the real people involved are getting interviewed about the events. The movie doesn't try to make anything look better than they really were. This means that the movie also have some surprises in it, that can have a real shocking effect as well. It all adds to the movie its realism and raw feeling and atmosphere that hangs over it. It helps to make the movie a real effective one.Its story also definitely makes this movie an intriguing one. The story seems simple, since it doesn't waste any time on side-plots but it's simple a solid and involving one. It's about fighting for justice and stand up against the well established organized crime. It's a powerful story that works out well in the movie. It's a movie that is incredibly effective, especially when you consider its production values and the limited time it got done in all.A great movie, with a great approach.9/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
