Reviews
WillSushyMedia This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
KnotStronger This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Erica Derrick By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
tenshi_ippikiookami "Out Live" is a martial arts movie of a mold that is not popular anymore: you have an over-the-top love story, with betrayals, poisons and people that marry the one that the friend wants to marry, that creates enough plot for what matters: fights, fights with swords, fights with secret techniques, fights here, fights there. You have Yu Jinha, who is the son of a fighter but doesn't know it, and Sullie, the daughter of the concubine. They know each other from a very young age, Yu having saved Sullie from a dangerous wolf. They grow up, they love each other, things start to happen that keep them apart.Well, the story is a little bit lame. It doesn't help that the direction seems to think we are in the theater and not in the movies, and the actors don't have much to work with. The jumps between scenes/set-ups are also too abrupt, breaking up the pace, things happening just because we need another fight, with little flow. The fights are OK, but nothing that you haven't seen before and the plot throws away Yu's team, who look really cool but just go around jumping in the background. All in all, the movie is not boring, but its style, plot and pace are too simple.
monsignorpage This is a tricky title to review. It is one of my favourite films, but has significant problems which drag it down. This was an ambitious project, a Chinese-style wuxia film made by a Korean studio, set in China with a Korean lead. It is set in the last days of Mongol rule in China, and follows a swordsman named Jinha and his tragic love affair with his childhood sweetheart. It was initially intended to be a drama with action elements, but was altered to an action film with dramatic elements before release. This is painfully obvious during a couple of the fight scenes which were tacked on after this change. It also means that much of the exposition was removed, which I personally liked since it allows the main character to keep an air of mystery, but some people may have problems with it. As is typical for Korean films, Bichunmoo does not actually tell the viewer when it jumps in time, and these elements combine to make the film confusing. I had to see it three times before I got all the intrigue straight. The lead actors are what really sell this. In wuxia tradition, this is a film about revenge, tragedy and overblown melodrama, which can easily become silly, but is very effective when it is done well. Many of the dramatic twists and turns are predictable, but they still carry weight because of the actors' work. Even though there is little here you haven't seen before, you still feel for the characters.Recommended.
Daniel Rodrigues This was one of the first Korean movies I've ever seen...and, truth be said, it knocked me out of my seat... The movie is touching, it has fantastic fights, great soundtrack...resuming, it's one of my favorite 5... I've watched Zatoichi, Musa the Warrior and Sword in the Moon...they are all fantastic movies, but this one, maybe because it was one of the first I've seen, was always more appealing than many of it's pairs...The fighting scenes are intense, fast-paced, accompanied by great instrumental hard rock melodies, that intensify even more the thrill of the action...the romantic story goes toe to toe against the most touching and sentimentalist love stories... All the actors are very good...If anyone out there missed this movie, then give it a watch...you will love it...If you look for some other films with this kind of quality, try Musa - The Warrior, Sword in the Moon, Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Legend of Evil Lake, Fighter in the Wind, or even Gojoe and Zatoichi...Thank god there's more to movies than the crappy pictures that Hollywood delivers nowadays (there are exceptions, but globally...)Give it a try...Asian MOVIES ROCK
larl58 This is one of my favorite movies. The musical score is superb(where can I get it)and the characters are fantastic. The only shortcomings with the film were the scenes deleted from the 2 hour version I saw which would explain the gaps in the story line more fully. LIke how did the main character Jinha get a band of ten assassins? How did he come upon the name Jahalong.Who were and where did some of the enemy characters fit in to the story. Where did the other love interest (unrequited) come from? Aside from this I love this film. JInha himself is not your typical hero character in appearance. Sullie the heroine is beautiful and the other characters are great. It would interesting to find out from which films got ideas from this film.
