It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.

The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity

This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.

Mirzya, when the trailer came out I couldn't help checking on the legend. The legend of Mirza Sahibaan. A sad tale of two star crossed lovers. They did elope together on Sahibaan's wedding day to another man and when found were killed by the relatives of Sahibaan. It is that poignant story that this movie set out to deliver with parallel drawn to a modern romance between two young people from Jodhpur. Oh how it fails !!! Firstly, the modern story of love doesn't make any sense. It has no practicality and absolute non trend setter. In the actual legend Mirzaa and Sahibaan grew up together and were in love since childhood. They were detached for a short time after their mutual attraction was discovered. Here, the girl moved abroad at a very young age and came back only to be betrothed to another man. This man she knew very well and she lead him on. Her betrothal wasn't against her wish. By this time she hadn't seen Her childhood friend the title protagonist of the movie for a minimum of 15 yrs. still when she comes across him and recognize him she hands herself over not caring to break her official engagement also. Riding 2 horses on one arse anyone? How can a person expect an old acquaintance to stay the same after so much time. Allowing a grungy horse care taker who never went to school and has a violent history to access you can only happen when you know the actor is Harshvardhan Kapoor. 2ndly there is a line repeated over and over "hota hai, pyaar mein aisa aksar hota hai". Especially after a murder and a suicide. I felt like finding the script writer or director and asking what they were thinking? Mirzaa of legend was not a sociopath or a criminal. If a child shoots his teacher he needs help. It doesn't happen often in love. No. Children that small are not supposed to feel in love like that. If one girl commits suicide in order to let another one elope with her friend, i am sorry, but that also does not happen often in love. Lives matter and are not disposable for main protagonists like flies dropping dead. 3rdly justice wasn't done even to the legend of Mirza. What was that tribe he was shown belonging from? What were those burning meteor like things dropping from sky? The script was so weakly written i couldn't believe it came from Gulzar. The music although annoyingly frequent was the only saving grace of the movie. This movie turned Mirzaa into a criminal and a stalker. Sahibaan turned into a beauty with no brains who came all finished from abroad only to have eloped with a guy she didn't know for years and whose plan was to "cross the border and phir dekhenge.." . Cross the border to where? Pakistan? The lesser being said about the performances the better. Harshvardhans face wasn't visible fully for the entirety of the movie and his dialogue delivery was weak.

When you approach the story different way then there will be ripples from all around. same happened with Mirzya as people doesn't understand even not bothered to watch it once (As people like to watch the gisi piti movies like Raaz reboot). It's not easy to tell any well known story with such a poetic way. From trailer to it's songs movie shaken the movie buffs like me for it's different approach and after watching movie also the effect remained same.Loved idea of showing the well known tell with touch of Shakespeare and specially Presentation of Mirza-Sahiban saga without unnecessary dialogues. Songs were woven with beautiful visuals. There were many moments in movie to cherish like, 1.Close up scene of Monish-Suchi lying on sand watching each other, 2. Monish-Suchi & Mirza-Sahiban smiling at each other all though knowing they were no longer live, 3. Mirza watching Sahiban with question in his eyes for broken arrows 4. Each frame of Mirza-sahiban storyalthough by putting more emotions or keeping climax more intriguing like Rang de basanti, movie would have been become classic tale.Hats off to Gulzar Saab for fantastic screenplay-story-lyrics, Rakeysh omprakash mehra for wonderful direction, Cinematographer for such decent picturization, Harshvardhan kapoor his hard work and performance, Sayami kher for her fascinating look and SEL for marvelous BGM & Music.

Mirzya, a much-awaited film by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, is inspired from the famous Punjabi folklore of a tragic love story of Mirza- Sahiban. It comes in the league of other tragic love stories of Punjab – Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal etc. This film is also the launchpad for Harshvardhan Kapoor (Anil Kapoor's son) and Saiyami Kher (Niece of Shabana and Tanvi Azmi). Expectations roar high, when the film is written by a living legend Gulzar and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash. Mirzya is poetic, painted beautifully on a huge canvas, visually spectacular, but the screenplay falters. Mirzya is not able to evoke the pathos of such a powerful love story, not soul-stirring. The film shows the much famous folklore in two eras, visuals interspersed with Daler Mehndi's powerful voice in the background. When the story of Mohnish / Adil Mirza (Harshvardhan Kapoor) and Suchitra (Saiyami Kher) is conveyed, parallels are drawn with the scenes of Mirza-Sahiban story too.Om Puri, a blacksmith, is shown working and saying that there would always be some fire in the streets of blacksmiths. Clubbed with this is that of Sahiban (Saiyami Kher of the old era) watching a group of horse riders galloping and her eyes full of appreciation for Mirza (Harshvardhan with the get up of an old era), a scruffy warrior winning archery competition against others. Throughout the film, relevant scenes from either of the timelines are blended and shown parallelly.Mohnish and Suchitra are great friends as children, and both go to school together. Suchitra, a disciplined child, and Mohnish, a naughty child, are almost inseparables. One day, Suchitra gives Mohnish her homework book so as to save him from teacher's punishment, but ultimately ends up getting punished herself. Mohnish, unable to bear Suchitra getting punished, takes a much undesired drastic step. That ill-fateful incident separates Mohnish from Suchitra. Later on Suchitra is sent abroad by her father who is in Police department. Years fly by. The backdrop changes to Udaipur from Jodhpur, where prince Karan (Anuj Choudhary) is eagerly waiting for Suchitra to return from abroad so that he can propose her and announce his marriage plans to her. Mohnish, who is now known as Adil Mirza is the one who is taking care of horses in the stable. Unaware of Adil's actual identity, Suchitra's and Adil's paths cross.Although the folklore is familiar to us, it is interesting to watch, how the parallels are drawn between Adil-Suchitra and Mirza- Sahiban's stories. How does Suchitra come to know regarding Adil's actual identity ? How Adil reacts when he sees Suchitra along with Karan ? What happens when Suchitra's father, Prince Karan's father, and in fact Karan react when they come to know regarding Adil and Suchitra ? Is the fate of Adil and Suchitra the same as that of Mirza-Sahiban ?The film had tremendous potential. In fact, the lyrical way of storytelling by blending two timelines that of Mirza-Sahiban and Mohnish/Adil –Suchitra's stories with songs also is brilliant. But, efforts are not taken to show / justify the love story or strong bond between Adil-Suchitra. Strong ties of love in a relationship, where the protagonists separated decades back, is not developed. It doesn't touch one's heart.Harshvardhan, Saiyami and Anuj are very good, but the lack of intensity in the script brings their intensity quotient down. Anjali Patil as Zeenat is also noticeable. Om Puri's presence is left incomplete on screen. Art Malik (A British Actor) and KK Raina who essayed Suchitra and Karan's father respectively are also good. The dialogues are less in the film, rather the story is intertwined with the dance sequences. Songs are having meaningful lyrics. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Daler have given good folk songs.Cinematography needs special mention, kudos to Polish cinematographer Pawel Dyllus.Mirzya is poetic, painted beautifully on a huge canvas, visually spectacular. Expectations roar high, when the film is written by Gulzar and directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, but the arrow misses the target. The screenplay falters. The film is not able to evoke the pathos of such a powerful love story, not soul-stirring. It lacks passion, intensity. But, one must watch it for the way this lyrical art is presented.

After a very high expectations, one should desire to gain something extraordinary. I'm from one of them. I'm die hard fan of Gulzar and Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. So, may be you can find it bias. The legend of Mirza-Sahiban was the concept which Rakesh had to filmed. For that his writer, Gulzar penned a similar story. And then narration goes smoothly in both the eras in the film. What made Sahiban to brake Mirza's arrows is the question to be found. And the team leaves you to think and find out whatever answer you would like to keep.Anil Kapoor's son Harshvardhan Kapoor is here as Mirza. And it's his debut film. Saiyami Kher plays the role of Sahiban. Both the newcomers had done above average work. All the other actors, like Om Puri, Art Malik and Anuj Chaudhary are good in their respective roles. Some dancers are there, and they keep coming to the screen to tell a pain in a folk-dance form. These little elements make this film a worthy watch.Otherwise, as far as story is concern, the question of broken arrows is good, but what else we want from the tale? Despite the fact that the team of Mirzya had not enough material to present, the team experiments and develops new things. In these new things, the major one is Indian Cultural Music.Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy & Daler Mehndi have given the music as well as background score. Gulzar has written lyrics in the form of poetry. Every single song with its meaningful words stays with you in your heart if you are able to listen it. If not, than just O Mirzyaa in the voice of Daler Paaji can able to melt your inner anger and you'll find yourself in some unknown moment which delivers only peace. Title track and Teen Gawah are five out of five songs. Every single bit of these songs are my obsession. I can't describe what I feel when I listen these songs, but for me it's wonderful experience. Hitchki, Hota Hai, Nadi, Chakora - all these songs deserve awards. No Indian movie has given this type of pure Indian music. And I'm not talking about only this year, I don't remember when did last time I hear these type of purity in Indian movie music. Hat's off! Now, let's talk about Cinematography by Pawel Dyllus. I can imagine whatever Mirzya film shows in Rajasthan. Though, that is superb, but let me be frank. I can imagine this type of cinematography. But... One thing is beyond my imagination, and that is the part of Ladakh. I can't imagine how difficult it was to shoot in Ladakh on such a large level. Like with the usage of 20 horses and 30 people, running here and there, and the little drops of water which move in slow motion with shining. Every single picture or shot is 100% perfect or even above that in the part of Ladakh.Director Rakesh Omprakash Mehra had given films like Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. These films got successful. But, Delhi-6 and Aks didn't. Mirzya will go in the second category. Box office collection will not be high as M.S. Dhoni is running nicely. And mix review of these movie will not get more people after weekend. The things will be remembered, are the visuals, the unusual film-making, the cultural music with great lyrics, the beauty of Ladakh & the answer of those broken arrows. Some people don't make films for money, or to be famous, they just make what they want to. I salute to Rakesh and his visions. Film will remain in my heart forever like one line of the title track speaks, 'Marta nahi hai Ishq O Mirza, Sadiyon Saahiban rahti hai'!Dare to love. Dare to be desirable. Dare to be like Rakesh. Dare to think and develop. Dare to do for self. Dare to be unusual.
