Reviews
Alicia I love this movie so much
Diagonaldi Very well executed
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Leoni Haney Yes, absolutely, there is fun to be had, as well as many, many things to go boom, all amid an atmospheric urban jungle.
Martin Bradley "Leviathan" isn't an easy watch. In some quarters it's been hailed as one of the greatest documentaries ever made; in others, as pretentious twaddle, (and not, presumably, for its content but for its style). It's about fishing, of the kind that takes places on trawlers in mostly stormy seas. There is no commentary and very little spoken dialogue and it's shot in such an obtuse fashion it's often hard to decipher what we are supposed to be looking at, (if ever a movie had a heart of darkness, this is it). It's also almost guaranteed to put you off fish for life, (and perhaps watching documentaries). Maybe the best place to see this is in a gallery where you can drop in and out at will since it's more of a video installation that a proper film. There's no denying a great deal of skill went into it but watching it I couldn't help but wonder if that skill might not have been used to better effect somewhere else.
tim-arnold777 The movie poster is purposefully misleading. C'mon...let's use a creepy Gothic font, a dark ominous sky full of creepy birds, and for good measure, a Bible verse in the opening sequence about a legendary creature of massive dimensions...and it is nothing more than a bunch of GoPro camera B-roll of what? How tedious and boring commercial fishing can be? How the big bad commercial fishing "leviathans" are overfishing the ocean? Good Lord...my friend's 12 year-old grandson has amateur footage on Vimeo that puts this tripe to shame. My advice to the makers of this movie? Be honest. Being a lousy film maker is nothing to be ashamed of. I certainly couldn't do it. But what I would never do, is post a picture of a devastatingly handsome man in his late twenties on Match.com and not understand why my hot young date was upset that I actually turned out to be an overweight man in his late fifties with wrinkles, saggy neck skin, and thinning gray hair.
ged_b It's not a documentary. It's art. As such it is quite unusual and can be a bit hypnotic, but as a documentary, it is dire. Perhaps if I'd been ingesting LSD25 or other hallucinogenic, or even been smoking some 'righteous' herbs it might have won me over more, but chilling out one cold evening it was neither entertaining nor enlightening nor even controversial or emotional at all.Dull art, mostly. It even goes as far as to begin to repeat itself at one point, and allowed me to think.. "Oh good, it's ending with full circle", but it was only half way.
euphoria-entertainment I think that this was the worst movie I have ever watched. Please don't waste your time viewing this movie as I'm sure you have more important things to do then waste an hour doing absolutely nothing useful. Go take a hot relaxing bath instead. I wish I had have done that. I feel like I have lost IQ points from sitting here watching this movie with no narrative and awful cinematography. It cannot even be classified as artistic it is that bad. I see nothing of any use coming out of this film except a bunch of angry people that spent money or time on it to watch it. If you like the sea and want to learn something just watch the Discovery Channel or something and if you want to be entertained definitely do not watch this movie. Thank you to the producers and whoever else was involved for wasting their time and money on making this when there are starving children and helpless animals that would have benefited from you just donating that money instead. wow. what a ridiculous world we live in.
