If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.

One of the best movies of all times! I love this movie, it is not for everyone, but definitely perfect for some weirdos out there :D if you like the book of movie "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" you will like this movie, too. Knowing that it was shot before I was born makes it even more special, because even if for some it is illogical, the film provides a lot of truth about our own world, our own values and communication.

... should have been made by the people who made Kin Dza Dza-- which is very much in the style/genre of the Hitch-Hiker's books, radio, and TV series created by Douglas Adams (but not the Hollywood movie), since they all have the guts AND the smarts to lampoon their own culture/ civilization. The difference being, instead of a quintessential Brit (Arthur Dent of the books, radio and TV series-- not the movie), Kin Dza Dza features a quintessential Russian of the late Soviet Era who is always acting tough and trying to bluff his way through every alien situation-- all the while burning through his only trade-able resource by the sheer absent-minded force of habit. Not to mention that what got our protagonist into trouble in the first place, was his hubris in trying to call the bluff of an alien-- when he really should be getting some macaroni for the missus....And true to his character, he continues making clever AND bad decision throughout the movie with an imperturbable air of irritation and authority. Oh, and there's a Georgian who gets caught up in the sequence of events, even though everyone keeps advising the Russian to dump him.Ah, the overt racism that the Soviets had to live with in an alien world-- where everyone looks no different from them-- forcing them to make a living as caricatured entertainment for the aliens.... But this is just the first part of the movie! The Soviets eventually figure out how to outsmart the mind-reading aliens-- who naturally never allow themselves think of the truth-- by thinking up bad moves which the aliens immediately act on, since they are so used to second-guessing people.Sigh, those good old days of satirical sci-fi, before people started losing the ability to look AND laugh at themselves-- highly recommended to anyone who still knows what satire is.

It is an outstanding movie! In order to really appreciate it, I had to see it twice. One of the themes is the Soviet Perestroika, but a lot of other themes are treated: friendship, social & cultural rituals, racism, bureaucracy, communication and many others. Moreover, the film is very sound from a Sci-Fi perspective: The machines look a bit old-fashioned, but there is nothing that isn't convincing. The behavior of the aliens seems to be odd at first sight, but after some time (and esp. if you watch the film more than once) it has a certain logic. The dialogs are very funny. The Moscovites' strategies how to tackle with the aliens and their culture are quite interesting.

English/American culture (for the most part) tends to be rather reclusive, for example, there are virtually no foreign language songs on the radio. Because of this, many classics are missed, simply because people do now know about them. This movie is the best example of a great classic unknown. If it would be made it Brittan in the sixties, it would have defiantly achieved cult status, and be widely regarded as all-time sci-fi classic. Alas, it is in Russian, and made at the end of the cold war, and therefore virtually unknown outside of the former Soviet Union. The movie is full of wonderfully black humour (if you are higher up on the social scale, you sleep on a bed without nails, and they cannot beat you in the middle of the night), desert world with rusted metal structures, and wonderfully eccentric telepathic aliens with bizarre social structures. This movie is truly a must see a word of warning however, this is so far from a Hollywood movie, it is it's evil twin. Unlike Hollywood it has: A story Strong characters Crap special effects Complete lack of "touchy feely"To get the best experience: 1. find subtitled version 2. find a Russian to watch it with you
