The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

I'm almost lost for words - but I'll give it a go. In all fairness I gave up after 35 minutes, so if there was a miraculous turnaround - I missed it. In Enemy Hands feels pretty much where a roll of film ended up, it presents the sort of craftsmanship we first saw when talking films took over from silent movies. This film provides little more than the fact that the characters actually can speak. The acting is, unexpectedly, poor. The dialogue is, almost amusingly, bad. The direction is below comment - so I won't.It would be nice to be able to come with a few pointers along the line "if you liked that film you may enjoy In Enemy Hands" but I cannot think of any redeeming quality. I have heard that there are people who enjoy it - so that makes this review as useless as the film. If there are different qualities of bad - this is a saddening bad film. It not the aggressive "what the hell was that" it more of a "what just happened there" - I don't know, I just know it wasn't good.

It has an interesting story executed poorly. I couldn't figure out if this was supposed to be a serious drama or light camp. Acting was average with standouts William H Macy carrying the film as well as the German executive officer. Still it actually moved well for me and I was entertained by it. I have a keen interest in U-boats having traveled the world to see them as well as the US fleet subs. The feats performed in this movie by the submarines underwater is essentially science fiction in pre-1945 submarine warfare. Loads of other technical errors as well in the production, but in a quick and dirty film who cares. It was made on a budget and that's that. So if you want to really see reality, Das Boot still stands alone. I give it 5 starts, for sloppy production, but still recommend it over most of the garbage on Netflix.

This movie is running on Danish television as I write this. I watched about half of it, then I decided to abandon ship. Obvious factual errors (and I'm not even a sub-buff, although I have a general interest in military, warfare, and WW II), silly "dramatic" effects, like when Macy has a "vision" (?) of his wife aboard the German sub, the ridiculous concept of prisoners being kept chained and standing for three days, a chained prisoner with a breathing device which he spits out, etc, etc.I haven't seen much of Macy; he seems to be a competent actor, but what a waste...This movie s(t)inks. It really makes me regret I didn't buy the director's cut of Das Boot when I saw it at a fairly bargain price in a store just today. The comments here on IMDb were far more entertaining than the movie.

It was very close to awful but still not as bad as the "U-571" which serves as back stopper regarding U-boat movies. The story was full of flaws and the manuscript didn't hold much water.I always try to spot the obvious details that cry out sloppiness and if realism was an issue in making this film, they didn't succeed: The filmmakers couldn't even resist the chance of making the bad ones speak "evil German" and plaster their boats with swastikas and other Nazi-symbols. The Krigsmarine was proud not to "heil" at anyone, they shook hands even with Hitler (and reluctantly succeeded with a small "heil"), and I'm sure that if a flag was brought along, it would have been the marine's own. The same goes for the swastika in the soup cup!The depth charges landed almost on top of the boats and still they survived. Some poor explosives the allies used! And then they actually succeeded downing a submerged sub with their cannons. That was impressive!I could not help being impressed of how spacious the subs seemed and yes that the air was so clean that they were allowed to smoke in it.When the boat finally surfaces, the loose ends are tied up within 3 minutes; this was much to fast for me - and then again it wasn't. It should have stopped 90 minutes earlier. Don't watch it!Macy is a good actor but absolute no hero type. He'll always be that cracking up Fargo-guy to me.
