Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
luke5119 When I first saw this film, I had low expectations. Based on what little I knew about the film, I figured it was your typical teen rom com period piece, set in the 80's or something. This film is anything but that, and I was definitely pleasantly surprised. Carried by strong up and coming actors Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, this film takes you on a rollercoaster ride through the summer of 1991 in Cape Cod. Powered by a dominating soundtrack of late 80's early 90's top radio play tracks, it definitely sets the tone for the entire film and plants your mind firmly that time. Without giving away too much, this film definitely takes a turn you weren't expecting and ends in such a way that is both equally satisfying and frustrating. Even if you weren't a teenager in the early 90's, you feel a sense of nostalgia just watching this movie. As others have stated, director Elijah Bynum's cinematic style is similar to that of Martin Scorsese, and this is especially present in the opening of the film. While this film is unlikely to win any awards or get a lot of attention, it's definitely worth the watch at least once.
ViolentStarfish The only reason I saw this movie was so I could see Timothée Chalamet, because I didn't get to see Call Me By Your Name, but people were talking about how great of an actor he was. Though his acting is pretty much the only strength this movie has going for it. Every other actor isn't the least bit convincing and they made their characters incredibly one dimensional. The story is incredibly lame and pulled back. The film relied way too much on making it stylistic and hip, and forgot how to tell a decent story. And even then, most of the stylistic choices were either out of place or incredibly forced. Even with all these choices that the movie makes it has a very tough time finding a tone. I wish the movie didn't pull back on so much like nudity and drug use. I wish they would mess things up a little bit. It felt really tame. I did really enjoy some of the music. The cinematography is really great and I even enjoyed some of the sequences I didn't expect to enjoy. But most of the movie felt really ham-fisted. How some characters are introduced felt rushed, the dialogue was sometimes really cliche and cringey. I already mentioned the biggest set backs above. I just wish they had directing and writing to back up the lead actor that plays so well. Overall, I was really disappointed with the movie. You're all trash.
seanybsta Great cast new and old, ending could've done with some fine tuning overall a fantastic coming of age movie. All 3 leads stand out as stars.
