The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

This is a sequel to one of the worst movies Steven Seagal was ever involved with, but he bailed out on this one, which greatly improved things. This is watchable, but not particularly memorable.A prison inmate called Twitch (played by Kurupt) and another called William Burke (played quite convincingly by Bill Goldberg) are holed up together in a jail where Twitch believes there is some gold buried. Really? Twitch is visited by his fiancée Cherise (Angell Conwell) and Burke by his daughter Ellie (Alona Tal). Anyway, a riot breaks out in the jail, and Alex Cortez (Robert Madrid) kills a fellow inmate, and two guards, then tries to escape. The two visitors get held hostage by Cortez.Burke and Twitch are already driven together, as the prison becomes ungovernable and the guards seem unable to reassert control despite many fight scenes. Cortez demands a helicopter ride out, or he will kill the hostages. One arrives. But Burke and Twitch find Cortez first. Cue another fight scene. The script is poor, but has a certain logic to it. The fight scenes are numerous but samey. The dialogue is amateur. Camera-work isn't too bad. Half way decent.

HALF PAST DEAD 2 is the follow up to a prison flick starring Steven Seagal (during one of his fatter periods) most people have never heard of. This sequel jettisons Seagal, replacing him with wrestler-turned-actor Bill Goldberg and pairing him up with rapper-turned-actor Kurupt.Despite the poverty-row budget and the distinct lack of originality in terms of the premise, HALF PAST DEAD 2 is a film that proves to be surprisingly entertaining. The reason is down to the narrative, which eschews the usual prison drama clichés and replaces them with a backdrop involving a massive prison riot which leads to almost non-stop suspense and action. The movie has plenty of flaws, not least in the script which gives almost every character defunct dialogue to spout. Goldberg (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN) is too poor an actor to elicit sympathy, but he's better than the obnoxious Kurupt and the rest of the walking stereotypes making up the supporting cast. Watch out for Robert LaSardo, once again playing to type. The action is fairly poorly handled but the pacing is spot on and I found myself caught up in the cheesy events as they moved towards something of a climax. It's certainly no classic but I enjoyed it more than the substantially more expensive original which is saying something.

for those of you who were desperate to find out what happened to Twitch in the original movie, heres your chance, and then get back to the real world. The guy who hid the gold in the first movie told Twitch, so he gets transferred to another prison, where wrestling champs hang around looking broody. Twitch plans to leave the jail in a month to get the gold to start a life with his woman. Then something happens and someone gets shot, and the film turns into Die Hard in another prison. But the wrestler's daughter is caught up in it all, so he and twitch go to find her and Twitch's woman. As you can imagine, the acting is below par, it features a lot of (really annoying) rap music, and poorly edited fight scenes. On the plus side, it's got that Hispanic bloke in it, who stars in every prison/action/thriller ever made, and he shuts a door in this. It's not very eventful, but at least it's harmless. If you were a massive fan of the original, it's okay-ish stuff. If not, you have been warned.

this is billed as a sequel to the first half past dead with steven seagal,, this one does not feature seagal,, but instead the pro wrestler. Bill Goldberg,, Korrupt is back,, but not Ja Rule.. this one isn't quite as good as the first,, Twitch gets himself transferred to Creighton which is probably based on Super Max the prison out in Colorado. Bill Goldberg is caught up in the middle of a gang war in prison along with Korrupt,, Korrupt has a sexy girlfriend, and Bill Goldberg a teen daughter who both get trapped inside the prison on visiting day,, a riot ensues and game on.. they kinda try to tie in the first movie with this one,, but really isn't the same.. Tony Plana makes a cameo appearance as the warden on Alcatraz, this movie is okay, but very hard to beat the first one.
