Reviews
ShangLuda Admirable film.
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Billie Morin This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
Sabah Hensley This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Sumit Bajracharya "Gulaal" starring too many unknown faces like Raja Singh Chaudhary, Abhimanyu Singh, Deepak Dobriyal, Jesse Randhawa along with the brilliant Kay Kay Menon, is unusually bold for a fictionalization based on real events. Using the plot on pursuit of power, betrayal and hypocrisies, the movie explores those corners that have never been attempted before. The remarkable thing about this Anurag Kashyap directorial is the way different layers accumulated into one solid drama. Presenting diverse characters form John Lennon fan Piyush Mishra to a minor role of Tabu fan Mahie Gill, every character is well refined. Anurag Kashyap has shown the enthusiasm in each scene with experimental cinematography like continuous use of red filters and yellow light.SPOILER ALERT:: Initiating from the college ragging, the movie takes several turns into various interesting issues. The scene of Ransa mocking Karan after being kidnapped and Karan killing him is terrific. Also Raja Chaudhary was stunning in a particular scene giving an awkward speech. But the final scene where blinded by his love for Kiran, the violent and aggressive Dilip reminds me of Travis Bickle getting outraged in the final scene of the "Taxi driver".While each individual performance is of high standards, Kay Kay Menon shines as Dukey Bana, while Raja Chaudhary showed the innocence of Dilip very naturally. In a relatively small role, we have Piyush Mishra, as the eccentric poet Prithvi Bana successfully showing his presence. Also he gave the music for the movie which complements the movie in every way.In the end we get a dish served with various character and cooked by the brilliant Anurag Kashyap who knows the world he's showing making this movie an engaging watch. A huge impact of theater can be seen in the movie due to Anurag Kashyap's theater background but still it's a great show that shouldn't be missed.
aridimagination For those well versed with Indian Student Politics that are prevalent in Northern India, this movie rings a bell.Anurag Kashyap has taken on a powerful subject and extracted good performances from his cast though Jess's role had no/negligible meat or purpose. The role of Ayesha Mohan makes us sit up and think deeply about how the influence of one's love for one's family and the need to impress them makes a person (in this case a lady) do things which one is not comfortable with (inferenced from the tears running down the character's face at the end of the movie when she realizes that she is just a pawn in her so called brother's hands).Though I enjoyed the movie, my husband disliked it making me realize that it would not be enjoyed and appreciated by audiences all over. This movie is meant for serious watching where you cannot get up go for some coffee and come back expecting to understand what is happening on the screen. So I suggest making time for it when you want to watch it.
S G Again and again this guy comes with a movie which simply blows you out.Kaun...Satya....Paanch...Black Friday..No Smoking...DevD.Every movie is pitch perfect...but i tell you Gulaal is nothing less than a masterpiece. This movie is anurag's best..and m saying that after evaluating it to dev d and black Friday......GULAAL is strong meat. It speaks honestly about sex, drugs, corruption, fundamentalism and the fissures that permeate "One India". In GULAAL, protagonists don't just sing to each other, they have sex and back street abortions....they smoke pot to relax; they fix ballots; they threaten and co-erce; illegitimate children threaten rightful heirs; and rightful heirs reject aristocratic privilege. The action is shot in ill-lit rooms and grimy interiors and back streets, as Rajasthani separatists subvert a student election to cream off funds. This is modern India indeed. But the lyrics of Prithvi Bana's brilliantly satirical songs speak of the aspirations at Independence. For Shakespearian audiences, the comparison that is most resonant is with Shakespearian tragedies - where love affairs are entangled with high politics, and a Fool sings apparently comic songs that skewer the case in point. I don't think I have ever seen such an ambitious and angry Indian film. Thums up Kashyap!!!You have earned a true fanboy in me....
