Reviews
Majorthebys Charming and brutal
Ceticultsot Beautiful, moving film.
Roy Hart If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.
Brennan Camacho Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.
laughingwarlock This movie sucks.I know how much work goes into a production like this and I feel for Mike and everything he did with this movie, but it's quality is shoddy as hell. And I don't mean the camera and stuff like that. I LOVED clerks and that was shot with the same thing.First of all, you can't tell when the protagonist is hallucinating and when he's not. The Cinematography doesn't carry those scenes. Now, this could be interesting if the plot was cohesive, but that doesn't happen either. A combination of poor dialogue, awkward transitions, and poor pacing stop that.Honestly, this movie is just one giant manifestation of how Mark is in denial about his alcoholism. But god bless him for making it.
David Edward Martin When I moved to Milwaukee's East Side (where UWM is located) in '91, I saw fliers all over the place advertising a feature film to be shot in Milwaukee and asked for people to fill openings for cast and crew.I'd already lost a chance to be a script messenger on what turned out to be FIELD OF DREAMS (my car was too undependable for me to take the job) so this looks intriguing. Unfortunately I was tied up with a helljob at Kelly Temp that prevented me from making the initial meeting. Sigh..... Oh well.....In the years that followed, I wondered what happned to that flick. Then I saw AMERICAN MOVIE and knew.Well, Mark, if you need me for some future flick, e-mail me!
interferon I watched Coven after the intrigue that manifests from watching American Movie, it is totally roughraw, this is a must-see for anyone interested in film making and film rhetoric, the inventiveness and creativity that is apparent here sticks out like a sore (bloody) thumb. The story is wierd yet strangely compelling (well it compelled me :) ) and some of the visual shots are ultimately memorable, there are some great bits of dialogue and the early signs of a great directing style waiting to be developed.Keep your eyes on this guy, if he ever gets lucky enough to get a decent budget he could make a real classic movie, hopefully starring Mike Schank as a gritty new york cop :)
MrNefarious I can say this was a great film. I enjoyed every minute of this film. I wish I could have seen it in the theater. I would like to see more films by Mark Borchardt. I did see the documentary film on the making of Coven and it made it that much better. I recommend this movie highly to all people that come into contact with it. Especially to those who are film makers. I also highly reccomend the documentary about the making of the film entitled "American Movie".
